Poll: Which Canadian wireless carrier is “the best”

With competition in the Canadian wireless market heating up, we thought we’d get a poll going to understand in your opinion which of the Canadian carrier is overall the best. Now this is a big question to ask but overall when you combine your experience with customer service, rate plans, coverage, reliability, device offerings etc. who is “the best” to you?

It’ll be interesting to see where everyone sits… is it Rogers, Bell or TELUS that’s winning the wireless battle… or new entrants WIND, Mobilicity or Public. How about Virgin, SaskTel, MTS and discount brands like Solo, Koodo and Fido. Give your answer below and if you wish to take it further write a comment too.

  1. Tough poll.. “best of the lot” would be a little easier to answer.

Generally I like my carrier, Telus, but at the same time I’d like to put them in a bag and drown them.

  7. Is there a “none of the above” vote? A pox on all of their houses. The US complains about how awful their rates and plans are….and ours are 50% worse. Why do you think we have such low smartphone penetration?

  8. Having been with Virgin’s prepaid service since 2006, I’ve been content with them. Being in SK, they are the best prepaid company to go with.
For contracts, however, the plans seem mostly the same, as well as the horror stories, so I am going with undecided for this poll.

  16. I work for a company that uses Rogers and I have not been impressed at all. They tried to make us keep our 7MB/month plan on our blackberries and even when we pushed back they didn’t give us much better options. Bell on the other hand really stepped up! more features at half the price. Even with killing the contracts early at full price, us moving to bell will save us money in 6 months! To be fair though, I think its just our rep with rogers that is a jerk. (btw, ~80 users on that contract)

Rogers’ been ripping off all Canadians for several years with their expensive plans, system-access fees, goverment-fees, and retarded rip-off gst/pst/hst.

  25. except for the rates… rogers has the best service, the most reliable network, the most phones, they r always leading, was the first to announce the iphone and android, have a lot of exclusive services for their customers like reserved concert tickets without the service fees jus got Drake tickets from them, so for me Rogers is the best wireless provider in Canada but does not have the best rates, i give that to Wind. But overall voting for Rogers

  28. Bell has been absolutely fantastic, and I’m on a consumer rate plan with no discounts! Sure, the price sucks, but for the features, the speeds, and the coverage, I cannot get the same elsewhere. Bell 3G beats Rogers, HANDS DOWN! EVERYWHERE I have checked, Bell 3G has always had coverage where Rogers does not (even with EDGE). You want a REAL network, use the Bellus network!

The comments about Rogers being the fastest & most reliable is a bunch of crap. You try going to a Jays game or a major concert and see the network crash. You couldn’t text AT ALL on Rogers when Canada won the gold medal in men’s hockey. Bell HSPA and CDMA were flawless.
Rogers used to have the greatest phone selection, but now they’ve turned to crap, and it seems like they don’t care that their customers are switching to a more robust network.

  32. Since when Fido and Rogers are 2 different carrier?

The best is Rogers because is the only one with 2G and 3G GSM network.
Bell & Telus only have 3G network and there coverage area are smaller in real life … at least in my experience.

But none of them are good enough.
Plan are way to expensive … not to mention the 3-year contracts.

When you’re a good carrier and your customers are happy, you don’t need 3-years contract ;)

  33. I voted other for Koodo. I like the network Telus uses, it’s much faster than Bell and better call quality too, but I don’t like dealing with the company. That’s why Koodo is the best. Good network, good plans, and run independently from its owner.

Very nice reception in the city + roaming with Rogerrs so you can be almost anywhere.. )

No contracts, flexible plans, nice support, and most important Very nice price compare to others.

One big disadvantage for me so far – not too much roaming agreement with other providers in other countries, so you can not send SMS to them.

  55. Rogers: People there are way too blunt, they couldn’t offer me internet with my 3G Device on Prepaid. Out of the running before I even got to the prices.
Bell: People there are too dumb (telling me what I can see on the webpage), they couldn’t offer me internet with my 3G Device on Prepaid.Out of the running before I even got to the prices.
Telus: Features a mix of blunt and nice people, still couldn’t offer me to even have a Sim on Prepaid.
Wind: People know what they’re doing (sometimes) and try to do it nicely, I could go on Pay Before with a Data Plan, It would cost me $20 for 500MB plus $5 for text PLUS $15 for talk. $40 a month. That’s sweet. Wind is a different company, because they have a Wind Community of which most cell providers don’t. When one user knows one thing all of them do. It’s like a circle of trust spread out between 6000 people and growing. Even though there are some annoying service issues, we find that what we’re paying is ridiculously low for Canada and say “screw it, I’ll wait”. All the people saying that Twitter helped Wind, they also used Facebook and their community on the website. Yet, no other service provider would get that kind of response because if they did post it on the website who would see it? The 20 people who are following them on twitter? Much help that would do. Well, Wind Winds, which ever way you slice it.

I was with Telus for a while and thought they were pretty decent but the phone selection is awful compared to Rogers – which is why I switched. Plus their plans are decent.

I’d like to add that whoever complains about taxes, service fees is 100% retarded. Every company charges these things in one way or another OR they just plain suck because their service is so bad that people wouldn’t put up with the charges. *cough*WIND*cough*

    The Blackberry Pearl 3G $329.95! Rogers $424.99…
They also have the Palm Pre for $299.95. So for people looking to go no contract. Hands down Bell has the most reasonable prices on their devices.

Wind has some pretty garbage phones that are pretty expensive.

Bell and Telus has the same network. So they should have the same level of reception.

Who is buying no contract phones from providers? What’s wrong with you? If you are going to shell out that much money why buy the garbage from the providers?

  73. WIND. Always root for the underdog – their business model is based on LISTENING TO THEIR CUSTOMERS. Can’t say any of the big three do that, except for claims we say things like, “unlimited is no big deal.”

  74. Everyone here comlpaining about the startups’ coverage must be under the age of ten. Does nobody remember when Rogers or Bell customers couldn’t get reception in places such as elevator shafts or basements? Does nobody remember the switch to digital from analog and the slew of reception issues that entailed, thanks to (as the telecoms billed it) buildings’ thick walls?

These small companies are on par with where the incumbents were 10+ years ago. Their tech is limited because their infrastructure is limited. They have to start making money to invest into improving network coverage. Remember the CRTC (aka System Access) fees? Charged because Rogers/Bell wanted to be able to invest more quickly in new infrastructure – now they exist as pure profit.

Rather than comparing apples with oranges, try actually objectively assessing each carrier against itself. Saying the Big Three are the best because they’ve been here the longest is like saying McDonald’s is the best restaurant because there are so many of them around.

  76. Bell has the fastest network on HSPA+ and has the best coverage in canada with blazing fast 21mbps (if only phones were could go that fast…..not yet but soon) i have a grandfathered plan with unlimited data on my smartphone. i never had to call customer service because i have had no problems.

  77. I was with Rogers for many years and I didn’t have any problems with them (until I wanted to cancel my service because I moved out of the country for two years).

I was with Koodo for a year and didn’t have any problems with them (until I wanted a 3G Blackberry).

When I decided to get a 3G Blackberry, WIND had the best option for me and I haven’t been disappointed.

I think different providers work better for different people.

  78. Best is such a subjective term for this poll, no one is ever right. When it comes to custoemr service and flexibility, Rogers is winning.. whereas I’ve found TELUS really takes the cake with its loyalty programs and developments. Bell just sucks straight up; they don’t listen to court orders, their own customers, or trends.

  79. From my experience living in Rural Saskatchewan, Rogers is worse than Sasktel, Sasktel is worse than Bell (although this may change with the new network… or just make them even worse) and Bell is worse than Telus. There is nobody who is really “good” but I haven’t had any major issues with Telus. Best choice right now in my opinion, even if the phone selection is horrid!

  80. I was a 15 year corporate account customer with Rogers in Vancouver and switched to Wind last month.

    I couldn’t be happier!

I bought my own GSM smartphone and only pay $10 for data with 3G speeds.

I roam on Rogers if I’m out of area but since I currently only pay $7.50/mo for voice I can afford to pay the extra roaming rate of $0.25/min. Plus, I can turn on SIPdroid and use data to make free calls instead.

Can you say that about your current carrier?

ps I can switch back to any of the “Big 3″ if I want cuz I’M NOT UNDER CONTRACT!

  84. Someone actually thinks this???

“Rogers, without question. Best service, best customer support, best, fastest, and reliable network, best phones in Canada, reasonable rates for the quality I get.

Went to Rogers 2 years ago and I’m very very very happy I’m no longer with Belus.”

  85. Over 2000 votes and WIND still has 35%? I am truly surprised. I didn’t expect any more than 10%.

I think this is less about how good WIND is but how horrible the other carriers are.

  87. So nice that people are slamming WIND’s reception.

I switched to WIND over 4 months ago, in that time I’ve had ONE dropped call. Yeah, one.

I don’t know how many Rogers/Bell/Telus fans are flaming WIND from the Diefenbunker right now, but I can talk on my WIND phone in my basement without a hitch.

Regarding “crappy and expensive phones” Hey, newsflash, when you’re a small carrier you can’t afford to have 20 different phones to choose from, so you have to target your audience. As for the expensive part, PHONES ARE EXPENSIVE. You complain about how expensive the phones are, yet you also complain that you’re locked into a contract. Wait, you aren’t locked into anything! You can PAY your way out of the contract, but you won’t.

I bought a T-Mobile G1 on eBay for $200. One of the best purchases I’ve ever made. Works great on WIND. Guess what? I can even roam in the states for Roger’s normal pay-as-you-go rates. Let’s see you do that on the big 3.

  88. WIND FTW! Fast and reliable data, great coverage in all the places I need it, and truly unlimited plans. I don’t care how “big” the other guys network is, the fact is most people (over 90%) never leave the cities and when they do it’s still very affordable with WIND roaming.

Besides, supporting the new guy is always the best thing to do. I supported FIDO when they launched too. GO WIND GO!

  89. Telus: Worst customer service I have EVER had! Their call centre is in the Philippines and they bearly speak English, if they don’t understand you they just hang up. I had an unreliable network full of dropped calls and an expensive 2 year plan. They had the balls to charge me for incoming messages too. Never coming back.
Rogers: Better network then Telus but still quite expensive. Some hidden fee’s in my contract with Rogers that annoyed me.
Wind: No contract, no hidden fees. Their network is limited to the city, but I never leave the city making it a trivial concern. Extremely cheap in comparison to other cell phone companies. I love it, couldn’t be happier with wind!

  90. Worse provider overall by a long shot….WIND hands down.Absolute garbage and useless.

Best in the technical sense…Bell!Great 3G network and most reliable.
Rogers Good…but not constant or fully stable in all areas.

  91. With Wind advertising constantly on MS don’t be too surprised if they win and that’s a complete joke…too bad all the countless people who left Wind unsatisfied are not here to vote and that tells you how much this poll is worth. What garbage and also shows how these lunatic Wind Fanboys waste their time and life.

  92. Wind FTW!

I’ve been with Wind since February, on my Nexus 1 Android phone, and have had zero dropped calls, am eating through data like it’s chips, and am loving the low charge, no contract awesome of it all. They have to be on their toes as if they degrade their services we can jump ship to Mobilicity or other, without paying outrageous ‘break’ fees on contracts.

Never used data before as I refused to lockin to Robbers’ or bellend’s excessive plans.

Why are Koodoo, Fido, Virgin, Solo separate options? They’re all just rebrands of the falling monopolies. Amazing how many people in Canada don’t know what a ‘wholly owned subsiduary’ is.

The writing is on the wall. Next up, home Internet competition. Are you listening CRTC?

  96. WIND mobile is the BEST by far here. Been with them in Ottawa since they arrived in April…. NEVER a dropped call, CLEAR calls and always good signals. Way better reception than I ever had with Rogers and NO ONE SIDED CONTRACTS WITH THEIR RIPOFF TERMINATION FEEs. Roger’s and Bell customers are getting royally S C R E W E D but people are lazy and they will get caught by these companies. I like WIND. Had good service too, friendly for a change. I like that too.

  97. What they fail to mention is that there really are only 4 companies, Rogers, Bell, Telus, and Wind. Every other company names is a subsidiary of the big three, therefore eliminating the actual competition with illusion. What a big surprise (sarcasm intended)

  99. “Best ” of a bad bunch.
OK, I’ve used Bell, Telus, Rogers and several others (worldwide)
One time Bell was great, got a good deal, but it ran out. Switched to Rogers, same story, switched to Telus (A BIG JOKE), why is Telus in business?
Got several calls from Rogers, nada from Bell. So I was offered a great deal with Rogers, after much negociation.
The question is : “why do we have to fight to get a good deal” ?
