If you want to take a risk and get yourself a refurbished iPhone 3G… Bell is offering up a Family and Friends deal that sees this hit a low cost of $9.99. There are some stipulations as this has to purchased on a 3-year with a $50 monthly Smartphone Combo plan. In addition, Bell states in the legal area that the offer goes until June 30, 2010.
Also, before you leap into this deal know that Bell has confirmed to be launching the new iPhone 4 in July. Here’s a rundown of what “refreshed” means to Bell: “Refreshed phones are phones returned to Bell in an unused or slightly used condition and that have passed rigorous Quality Assurance testing. Phones have been updated to current software and are verified to operate in accordance with their specifications. Some phones have minor cosmetic scratches that do not impact proper operation. Each phone carries a 90-day warranty from the date of purchase.”
Check it out here at Bell
You’d have to be crazy to buy that now on a 3-year contract.
What would be better is if they offered to sell it outright at really decent price.

Don’t even think of it if you want to take advantage of the new iOS4.
3G can’t upgrade, while 3GS can.

Sigh…I don’t care if they give me the hardware, I’m never signing a wireless contract again.
It does astound me how something that is around $700 to buy new is now $10 if you sign your life away. Think they’re making money? Yeah..I thought so.

According to the Apple website you will be able to upgrade the 3G to the new OS… but not all features will work.

If your going to have service for 3 years, why not get a free phone or a subsided cheaper price on a expensive smartphone.
THERE IS NO DISCOUNT for not getting a 3 year contract and buying own hardware.
There is no discount for 30day month to month no contract.
In 3 years Shaw/Wind/Mobilicity will be worth it. At that point buying your own phone from these providers will be worth it. At this point it is not worth all the B.S unless you are strapped for cash and willing to deal with these new entrants growing pains.
Right now for some people this 9.99 price is a deal. They don’t care about the iPhone 4′s minor updates. They are minor. Also when taking that 3 year, call retentions and make a deal on price plan for the 3 years to hold you over for the new providers to become 100%.
Sounds like an awesome plan for many…

@Eric : You’re smoking crack.
This is the worst “deal” i’ve ever seen. the 3G is an old ARM11 based device that even using os 3.0 is slow as hell. It’s a 2 year old device that needs to die already. It’s hay day is gone a long time ago. If Bell sold it for 9.99$ with a 1 year contract, then yes, i would call it a deal. Anything more than that and it’s a rip off.
Of course, nothing really surprises me from the big 3 anymore. It’s sad that pple are i****s and buy into these kind of traps.

As if Bell even attempted to put this “promo” on. What a horrible deal, anyone willing to lock into a 3 yr term on a 3G iphone is nuts! and at $50 minimum data/voice plan. Suck it Bell, what a bunch of tools. If they were smart they would just sell off there Bell 3G’s at a low price on a one year term. They will end up selling at a stupid price or chucking the ones that don’t sell.

Eric has a point. Not every that uses a phone is an “OMG MUST HAVE THE LATEST!!!!!!11!@!one!!1!”
There are people out there that just want a phone that will work. If they can get a cool looking phone for 10 bucks with a 3 year contract, why not?
My mother is the perfect example of such a cell phone user. She’d love to have an iPhone, if only for the novelty of it. To her, it’s just a phone.

So get her an iPhone from ebay for 150$ – 200$ and don’t lock her in a 3 year contract so that when she realizes what a ripp off Robbers/Bellus is and will want to switch to a new entrant, she won’t be stuck with a huge ETF.

Adi,
The new entrants to the Canadian Wireless market can not use any of the released iPhone’s, or the coming iPhone 4. So they are irrelevant to the discussion.
For many this fact is deal breaker to going with the new players. They just want an iPhone.
Why would people want to buy a 150-200$ used phone with a reduced battery and not even a 1 year warranty?
For someone who has a dumbphone and wants an iPhone. MANY do not care for bells and whistles of the 3gs and iphone 4. The cost of 9.99+addon a data plan to there corp plan or retentions plan will be enough to qualify for a 9.99 iPhone price.
I WOULD NOT DO THIS. Thing is someone like my sister who would not spend a dime on a phone would go for this. Also people on tight budgets who can afford a plan but not a 150ish-300$ upfront cost of the 3gs/iphone 4 will eat this up. 9.99+35+tax=50$’s in B.C GOOD deal to many.
Also the new entrants will have crappy network footprints for the next 3 years. Many will wait it out and switch after that is resolved.
Finally,
YOU GET NO DISCOUNT FOR NOT TAKING A CONTRACT….
One gets cheaper price on a nice phone.
one can call 611 and ask to be transferred to retentions quote winds plan and say is there anything ontop you can do to make me stay?
Then say how about the 9.99 iphone on a 3 year and addon free text and caller id. Get the 50$ smartphone valueplan and there doing okay. Bell will easily play ball and give that to keep you.
You can disagree if you want. Each to his own. Please do not use strawmen arguments on this. For some this works out as a great option.

According to Eric, you get NO DISCOUNT for not taking a contract, so why not? Your “discount” essentially doesn’t get applied until you are half way through a 3 year contract. If your phone lasts you that long, then you are doing great. If it breaks? Sucks to be you. Oh guess what, only 1.5 years through your 3 year contract but your phone is broken?? Well you still have to pay the ETF to leave. $400 (or $720 with Telus) please! OR you can sign another 3 year contract to get raped by Robellus again as they keep increasing their rates on texts, CID, Long Distance etc.. and there’s nothing you can do about it… HAHAHAHA!!!
Basically, you can sign a contract, hope to hell your phone lasts the full 3 years of the contract and hope that you never have a need to change your carrier at all for that time period because they would never increase your rates or up the prices……
OR
You can bite the bullet, pay more and buy your phone outright and then have the freedom to choose any plan on any carrier that you want. If the carrier starts to screw you around or has bad service, you just say “Adios!” and you find a carrier who really cares about you as a customer. Not as a piece of meat. AND NO ETF!
That’s YOUR choice! Make it a wise one!

My phone has lasted me 3 years through my Fido contract. Do I want a smart phone? Yes. Is it a necessity? No.
I think it’s a little ludicrous to assume that everyone is irresponsible with their phones because you are.
Your argument about a carrier increasing the price doesn’t really make sense to me. You’d face the same trouble with a no-contract carrier. In fact, you’re probably more susceptible to price increases because there is no contract to fall back on if they do decide to increase the price for their plans.
Now, let me be clear, I am very happy that WIND is in the market, but I think everyone’s so happy about the competition, they’ve lost their screws a little.
A hardware subsidy is going to get a lot more people to bite than a cheaper monthly plan. At the end of the day, if you can move a product NOW, it will be better for your bottom line. If I do buy a phone, I’d better hope that I’m still enchanted by it for at least 2 years, because otherwise, I’ll just be dropping more $$ on another new phone. (It’s YOUR choice! Make it a wise one!)
The only place your argument works for me is the ETF. With a contract, you do have an ETF and that’s the only thing about a contract that is terrible. However terrible ETFs are, they’re kind of like the cost commitment of buying a new phone, except it’s blatantly more exploitive.

You seem to virulently oppose the ETF. What do you propose, then, that they companies give you a massive discount on their phones, yet allow you to leave your contract early just because it breaks?
If you seem to break your phone often, then go ahead and pay a lot of money and do not sign a contract! Simple as that. But what works for you does not work for everyone.
I’m enjoying my expensive smartphone. Has yet to break for me in two and a half years. And if it does, then I will simply buy an inexpensive replacement to put the SIM card into. When this one grows obsolete, I will go get another great phone for little money. In the meantime, I will enjoy the $600 I saved.
Look, I am going to be using cellular service for the next three years. I might as well save several hundred dollars on the phone. And that option exists. You may dislike it, but like I said, what works for you does not work for everyone, and vice versa.

Great deal, but it’s only under $200 off for a out of date iPhone which can’t use many of the functions in the new iOS4.
Of course the huge monthly fees will still make them lots of money.
Fido is going just a bit further, giving their 2 year iPhone customers a new iPhone.
