CRTC completes review of Mobilicity, launch imminent?

The CRTC sent out a e-mail titled “Upcoming CRTC Decisions and Regulatory Policies: 3 May to 7 May 2010″. Specifically for telecom they’ve noted the “Ownership and control review” for Dave Wireless (Data & Audio-Visual Enterprises Wireless Inc), otherwise now known as Mobilicity.

The CRTC started their review back in March and Secretary General, Robert A. Morin stated in a letter that DAVE “appears to comply with the legal control requirements of the Act”… so more than likely you can expect the Mobilicity brand to get the go-ahead to launch their new wireless network.

Toronto will be the first launch city (we hear during the first week of June), followed by Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Ottawa later in the year. Mobilicity invested $243.1-million for 10 licenses during the Canadian Wireless Spectrum Auction and will offer “No Contract. No Credit Check. Unlimited Wireless.” to their customers.

  1. Speaking in general terms, I am of the opinion that this is good news for all Canadians.

Looking at the bigger picture however (and observing similar infrastructure escalation occur in Europe) I doubt that it will really benefit anyone who does not reside in (or near) a major Canadian city. To all who travel extensively (who are looking for a better deal) I would advise to prepare for the new paradigm – to be prepared to carry many different SIM card cards around in your wallet (or purse :)

  2. I really hope this is better than the Wind launch, hopefully they have realized that it is important to cover both Toronto and the surrounding suburbs.

  11. Quebec is stuck with Videotron, another thief like Robbers but I guess Public Mobile is a consolation now that will be launching its 2nd generation ugly phones with the cost structure of 3rd generations phones. Canada is a banana republic when it comes to cellular service.

  13. Wind, Public and now Mobilicity have all made the same fatal mistake by launching their network in Toronto (the largest market in both pop & coverage — not an easy task for newbie cellco’s). Not only are they offering the same plan (no credit check, unlimited local calling) at around the same price, but their phones are limited & crappy, which you have to pay full price for! What a trainwreck the competition turned out to be.

  14. I don’t see how launching your network first in Toronto is a mistake. Yea of course their don’t have a wide variety of phones they’ve been around less than a year, give it some time. You pay full price so you don’t have to a 2yr or 3yr contract. I wouldn’t say it was a train wreck.

  15. They’ve not been advertising themselves in the market at all. What is their strategy? Wait for everyone else to launch and then come out with this huge over the top marketing campaign? To be honest the head of their organization made me lose interest, I had high hopes for them but he has been talking so much smack that it made me lose interest. I wanted more from them.

  18. I bought a phone and got a plan under false pretenses that I was to be provided service in a covered area. I am right in the middle of their supposed coverage area and I have to re connect to the network every 2 – 3 minutes. I brought my phone back for a replacement and the lady was outside trying to connect to the mobilicity network. This company is NOT ready to provide the service, they should NOT be selling phones to anyone!
