This is a bonus for today… for all those who have been waiting to get their hands on the Nexus One… you can now order this and officially ship into Canada and hook up via Rogers bands for a no contract price of $529 USD. Google says on the Nexus one site that “Compatible with 3G on AT&T (U.S.) and Rogers Wireless (Canada)” and “Supports three 3G/UMTS bands (850/1900/2100 MHz) and four GSM radio frequencies (850/900/1800/1900 MHz)”.
Update: WIND Users can also purchase the Nexus One, just select the T-Mobile option. Also, the fine folks over at TELUS wanted in and tweeted to confirm that “the Nexus One Phone will work on our 3G+ network with a TELUS sim card”. So this will also work on Bell… eventually Videotron and Mobilicity.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Exactly; if I’m purchasing the phone outright I can use it on whatever carrier I want that’s compatible. John, you think you could find this out for us?

I should also mention that you can buy a version that is compatible with WIND mobile. That’s the “T-Mobile” compatible version. This version will actually also work with Rogers (only Rogers, not Bell or Telus) but you will not be able to use their 3G network, thus only giving you EDGE speeds for data.

@ above asking about Bell/Telus
The point is for Google to be carrier agnostic, you choose the phone first, then your desired service. Rogers is merely an example. Rogers did absolutely nothing to bring the Nexus One to Canada besides being a large service provider and thus… a better example to put on the website.
Also, note that Canadians can also buy the AWS version of the phone unlocked as well, even though it only mentions T-Mobile for US, it will work on WIND.

I think Rogers will offer some sort of subsidy with Nexus One if you extend your contract. That is probably why they mention Rogers.
It should work on Telus and Bell as well, but I wouldn’t recommend it because of 3G issues with that phone. You can’t even fall back to 2G with Bellus.

Rogers is already touting it on their blog, making it sound like they are providing it and that they helped bring it up here to Canada.
You would have thought the authour of this article would have mentioned that fact that this phone would work on any of Canada’s big three 3G networks.

Okay, please someone help me get this straight.
1. If I order the Nexus One, it will work on the Telus and Bell network in Canada? Yes or No?
2. If I travel overseas, because this phone has 2100 mhz it will work on other GSM networks. Yes or No?
Thanks!

I would venture to say the phone is unlocked because it says “compatible with” on the website for T-mobile, AT&T and Rogers.
So should I go ahead and order it? I have Virgin phone actually. Unlocking it I do not believe is the issue. More so the matching of frequencies.

They named rogers because, rogers only provide GSM phone. Telus/Bell weren’t mentioned because they still offer CDMA phone and Google might not want to create confusions by saying it supports Telus/Bell.
But his phone does support new Telus/Bell network

The Nexus One is an unlocked phone. There are many people in the US that purchased one and are using it on AT&T only on 2G. So there would not be a need to unlock the phone to use it on Bell and Telus. I figure they only mentioned Rogers since the phone will work on 2G/3G they same way it will work on AT&T

The Nexus One device is unlocked and will recognize SIM cards from any mobile service provider using the GSM standard.
Canada
Two versions of the device are currently offered. Both versions support four GSM radio frequencies (850/900/1800/1900), but the supported 3G/UMTS bands will differ depending on the version selected. When ordering, you’ll be able to select either of the following devices:
3G coverage on networks that use the 850 MHz, 1900 MHz, and 2100 MHz frequency bands (recommended for use on AT&T in the US and Rogers Wireless in Canada)
3G coverage on networks that use the 900 MHz, AWS, and 2100 MHz frequency bands (recommended for use on T-Mobile in the US)
In addition, the Nexus One will deliver 2G/EDGE speeds on these networks and also supports WiFi.
These cover most major GSM mobile providers worldwide; however, if you’re unsure of the bands supported by your mobile service provider, please contact your provider directly prior to purchase.

Price is definitely steep. They want almost $30 for shipping to Canada which brings the purchase price close to $550 USD.
I kind of wish there was a subsidized option similar to what they did with T-Mobile. But a reasonable one, with a max 2 year contract but I doubt any of the big 3 would agree to that.

I’m sorely tempted to get one of these but I’m with Bell and although several people here have posted that this new Nexus One would work with Bell network, there seems to be some press release from Google that says not.
http://www.thestar.com/entertainment/article/780601–google-s-nexus-one-phone-now-available-in-canada?bn=1
So if anybody has any definitive answer it would be much appreciated.
I understand that it is an unlocked and that is not the issue but I’m more interested in knowing if it will work with Bell’s voice and data network correctly.
Thanks.

It will work on Telus, Bell, Fido and Rogers just fine.
They all operate 850 and 1900 Mhz HSPA (3G).
You can buy Telus SIM cards for $9.99 from any Telus store.
Rogers sells SIM cards for $20-$40 at their stores. You can purchase Rogers and Fido SIM cards for $10 to $20 on Craigslist, Kijiji, Ebay, Redflagdeals.com or HowardForums.com.

So after spending some time Googling, is the issue that with the Bell network you can only use their 3G network?
EG. If you’re out of 3G coverage you’re SOL?
As the rest of their network is CDMA which isn’t currently supported by the Nexus One?
Whereas with Rogers their network is 3G/GSM so if you’re out of 3G coverage then it falls back on GSM?
I’m thinking it might be better to wait for the (rumored) forthcoming release of the CDMA Nexus One.
Anybody else have any thoughts?
Thanks

Reasons why Google would say that the Nexus one is NOT compatible with Bell and Telus in the Star article -
- they are ignorant of the fact that Bellus has a HSPA 3g network
- they signed an agreement with Rogers to say that the N1 only works on Rogers (maybe that’s why paid aps are/were only showing up on Rogers Android phones)
Interesting how, even though Wind said they were talking to Google about the N1 Google didn’t bother to add compatible with Wind to the 1700mhz model
And for all those asking, yes is unlocked. That was the whole point of the Nexus 1 – but the phone use it on any carrier that supports it.
YES IT WILL WORK ON BELLUS – all you have to look at is the frequencies it supports to see that !

Please people, research. Bell and Telus have 3g coverage everywhere that they have CDMA (apart from Manitoba), so there is no need to have to worry about any fallback network !
If there is a CDMA Nexus one it will certainly NOT be unlocked, since CDMA phones cannot be sold unlocked and use a SIM card like GSM phones can be. Google would have to produce a specific Bell or Telus CDMA and sell it online, which of course they won’t do. They will for Verizon, simply because of that carriers size

More details from the Rogers red board :
* The Nexus One is only available for purchase through Google at http://www.google.com/phone. No Rogers retail channels (Rogers.com, Customer Care, retail locations, etc.) will sell the smartphone.
* If you’ve purchased a Nexus One from Google, you can then contact or visit Rogers retail channels to choose the right data, voice or SMS plan for you and activate it.
* Technical support on this device will be solely through Google at http://www.google.com/support/android or 1-888-48-NEXUS (63987). Unlike typical devices, Rogers will only provide service on the plan attached to the device.
* For more information about activating a Google Nexus One phone with Rogers, we’ll have an FAQ on Rogers.com soon.

I ordered a N1 in Jan, shipped it to to a US address, paid to ship it here, paid the tax and duty, activated on Wind, wasn’t happy with Wind so I cancelled last week and sold it – but I LOVED the phone
I never cancelled my Telus account so I got a Milestone, which I like, but not as much as I liked my N1(Milestone is harder to Root, cpu not as fast, screen not as nice)
Now Google releases a N1 that would work on Telus -arggggg!- I just signed a new contract to get the Milestone!

I just ordered this phone and it brings me several benefits:
- Android 2.x (for voice notes, etc)
- big-screen reading, so I can avoid buying an iPad (that pays for the phone right there)
- it’s unlocked, so I save $20 on the cost of unlocking, and I can move freely between networks (Rogers, Telus, Bell, Fido, Virgin, or even WIND)
- it can be rooted easily (unlike Rogers’ Magic which is now un-rootable)
@Mathieu, je suis d’accord, this is the best week in a long time for Android in Canada!

@Anigaran – Rogers also retails SIM cards for $9.99. It’s always up to the individual dealers though to charge whatever they want (Rogers, Bell and Telus).
As for the phone finally coming to Canada, I’m excited! The primary issue with any Android handset, is that if it’s not rootable, it’s no good in a year because carriers are irresponsible in releasing updates. This one should be a breeze!

You cannot move between Rogers-Telus-Bell-Fido-Virgin or WIND. If you buy the version made for T-Mobile/WIND it will only work on T-Mobile/WIND. If you buy the other version then you can move between any of the other networks mentioned.
I do hope that some carriers (i.e. ALL OF THEM) offer to subsidize this phone for those people that would like to pick it up for cheaper. Then again I’d love to see 2 year contracts in Canada.

St. Marie and Alberta… no, there’s more places with little holes and one of ‘em is pretty darned important for me).

Supports three 3G/UMTS bands (850/1900/2100 MHz) and four GSM radio frequencies (850/900/1800/1900 MHz)
the 3G will work on bell or telus this is the question i know the 3G will work for sure with fido and rogers…

Guys this seem rather simple.
If you are with Rogers or FIDO, get the “Rogers N1″. It will work with both 2G and 3G speeds.
If you are with Bell or Telus, get the “Rogers N1″ again. It will NOT work with 2G but work fine with 3G. Since the coverage area of 3G is pretty much the same as 2G it should be ok but I am not speaking from experience here.
If you are with WIND, then go with the original N1. Perfect frequency for WIND, works with both 2G and 3G.
I currently have original N1 on FIDO but will be porting to WIND when they clean up their current mess.

You can be sure that it will work on Telus and Bell. Whatever phone works on Rogers’ 3G network is compatible with Telus and Bell as well. The big3 share the same 3G frequency and the new guys share the AWS frequency.

I’m the same as Rene, the only thing that’s stopping me is knowing what the customs fees and taxes will be.
I spoke to Bell Technical Support yesterday to confirm a few things and the guy I spoke to was aware of the Nexus One and confirmed that it will work on their network.
The other point he made was that depending on your current phone you might need to get a new HSPA compatible SIM card from your local Bell store.
I have a Blackberry 8830 World Edition which is a CDMA phone so no SIM card to pull out and pop in the Nexus One, I have to go to the Bell store, get a new one (price will vary apparently) and get them to activate it (which isn’t a problem apparently).
Of course, if you’re currently using a 3G device on the Bell network then you’re good to go, just switch the SIM card over.

this is my question, i want to know if someone tested it on Bell or Telus

Azmi, the reason the original N1 you bought didn’t work on Bell is because their 2G is not GSM, it is CDMA.
The original N1 would work on Rogers, but only at 2G speeds.
There is absolutely no reason why the AT&T/Rogers version of the N1 would not work on Bell or Telus. The only thing is if there is no 3G coverage, then it would not fall back to 2G since as I said Bell and Telus do not have 2G GSM.
I am just waiting to see what customs fees are. Also I am curious to see if people who put it on Bell or Telus can access the pay apps. I know they unlocked it with Rogers, but not sure if it is unlocked with Bell and Telus.

Ontario taxes being 13% (GST + PST),
the cost of the phone USD 529, which is CAD 536 (today, approx). Add taxes, it is 536 * 1.13 = 605.68.
Shipping, $27, Total cost of phone including shipping is $632. Consider $635 just to be approx. Thats my bet.

Please note that services vary by device. Some services may require additional setup to work on the Bell network, or may not function.

Bought the phone Friday Mar 19 at 1:20pm recieved the email that it had been shipped at 7pm and just got the phone today Mar 23. The phone is amazing, love the screen. By the way I was charged 77.19 on delivery for taxes and duties.

So much for nafta. Literally the most useless piece of trade legislation i have ever heard of. It might be better off waiting until a subsidized version comes out.

If it is bought outside the province, shouldn’t they only charge GST? You should also be able to claim the US taxes, shouldn’t you?
