Motorola claims RIM infringes on 5 patents… files complaint

RIM has been hammered with patent infringement cases over the past couple months. The latest was Kodak last week. Today Motorola filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission that claims Waterloo-based RIM’s BlackBerry devices currently infringe on 5 of their patents in various forms: Wi-Fi access, application management, user interface and power management.

Jonathan Meyer, Motorola’s SVP of intellectual property law, said “In light of RIM’s continued unlicensed use of Motorola’s patents, RIM’s use of delay tactics in our current patent litigation and RIM’s refusal to design out Motorola’s proprietary technology, Motorola has no choice but to file a complaint with the ITC to halt RIM’s continued infringement… These patented technologies are important to Motorola as they allow for more comprehensive connectivity, a better user experience and lower product costs”.
