Rogers extends iPhone “limited time offer” to September 30th

After an onslaught of consumer feedback from the launch of the iPhone, Rogers created a “limited-time offer” plan that was a $30 monthly, this was supposed to end August 31st.

However, with the smartphone market heating up and the recent release of the BlackBerry Bold, Rogers has extended the “limited-time-offer” until the end of September.

Rogers spokesperson said “We learned a lot, we were educated by customers by what they wanted and we were educated by customers by what they used.”

Starting October 1st, Rogers will introduce a iPhone new data plan that is $25 a month for 500 megabytes a month (you must get a voice plan also and pay the system access fee of $6.95 though). Check this out too… 2 good moves in one day! On October 1st again, Rogers will roll out a “peace of mind protection plan” that will allow data users to monitor their activity via a free incoming text messages that warns them when they go over a specific level.

Hamilton said “Customers want to have some tools to give themselves predictable costs. You know those stories out there, every now and then you hear about them, that are really poor, terrible customer experiences where somebody’s got a five-figure data bill because their kid went and watched movies or something where they weren’t sure of the data usage, that’s not going to happen.”

  1. I have the 6GB of data a month and definitely use nowhere near that much. I would settle for a 500MB plan, but not for only $5 less. Drop it down to $15 or $10 and I might consider it.

  2. Is this when, having seen "where our monthly bill goes" (http://tinyurl.com/6ymye2), we are all supposed to say "AMEN Rogers"?

  3. Are you sure that 500 MB per month will be sufficient July 2011? A lot has changed in the past 3 years… a lot can (an probably will) change in the next three years.

  4. They're now demanding you sign a 3-year voice contract if you want this data plan, even if you have an unlocked phone.

  5. FInally rogers has provided the data I need. I remember last year, I couldn't get any more than 250MB. 6GB is a start, but I'll need more by 2009.

Being all mac / linux based, I've decided I'm going with the IPhone over the blackberry for development purposes. I plan on creating my own wigets to talk to my servers and web apps. RIM's dev program is wreckless I've heard and I'm fluent with Apple Script so it should be cake.

I plan on using the device for more notification purposes for monitoring apps and servers. One thing that excites me is I can even SSH into a server if needed while in route or when I sneak off to steelhead on the river. When a customer submits a job ticket, the server will send a notification to my iphone, which I can respond to by being redirected to a webpage on the server, then delegating the ticket to a team member. This way I don't have 20 tickets waiting for my approval when I get back in the office in the late afternoon. Hopefully I don't have to be in my office any longer :) *Dreaming*

The one thing that scares me is the long distance calls with clients in the states. I've heard competition is opening in Canada for 2009. This should help drive rates down finally. Its odd for me as a US citizen to see such high rates.

I'm back and forth from the states quite a bit so I'd prefer an unlocked phone so I can switch the SIM. Unlocked IPhones run about $1200 but the way I look at it is rate plans in the states are so cheap that its almost better to have another IPhone with a super basic plan there in addition to the one in Canada. I've found plans from US providers for unlimited data for $60/mo or less.

Since I we have a PBX, for the business phone line, I can redirect my extension to which ever phone I wish. http://www.onebox.com is another way it can be done with FindMe methods and more.

Another way I'll be saving some cash is when I'm at home, I can use the IPhone as a VOIP phone which will connect to my wireless router and then out through my VoIP service (like Vonage). It will act like a cordless phone when at the house but when I jump in the car, I'll switch it over to rogers with a couple of clicks. Very easy to setup actually. Apple is focused on VoIP. Vonage is easy to setup and from what I've read, the IPhone VoIP technology is already exists.

Lastly I really don't want a contract. But the fee to break it is $100 I think, which is doable.

    I hope this helps.

    Rock.
