Nova Launcher 2.3 beta gives older devices a taste of KitKat

Feeling the sting of an older Android version? Experiencing a burning sensation with a launcher stuck in the sickly sweet world of Jelly Bean? Fear no more, users of Google’s mobile operating system, fear no more.

One of the most popular third-party launchers, Nova Launcher, has released an initial beta of version 2.3, which “takes inspiration” from Google’s stock KitKat launcher and offers features like transparent menu bars on the home screen on certain devices.

While the KitKat experience is certainly not complete — it’s impossible at this point to emulate Google’s own swipe-left-for-Google-Now experience — the beta adds KitKat-inspired fonts, folder design and a new app drawer. It also allows Moto X users to access a transparent navigation bar, similar to the stock launcher on the Android 4.2.2-based device.

The new version is free for users to try, and the developer does not intend to charge for the completed update.

Head to the Google+ Community page to opt into the beta program, or download the APK directly.
