Streaming in Canada on Apple TV+, Crave, Disney+, Netflix, Prime Video and YouTube [Oct. 7-13]

Every week, MobileSyrup outlines some of the most notable movies and TV shows that recently hit Canadian streaming platforms.

A famed journalist is horrified to discover that a character in a novel reveals a big secret from her own life.

Based on the 2015 novel of the same name by Renée Knight, Disclaimer was created by Alfonso Cuarón (Roma) and stars Cate Blanchett (Tár), Kevin Kline (A Fish Called Wanda), Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat) and Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Power of the Dog).

Crave

Bad Boys: Ride or Die

Detectives Mike Lowery and Marcus Burnett go on a dangerous mission to clear their late police captain’s name.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die was directed by Adil & Bilal (Bad Boys for Life) and once again stars Will Smith (Mike Lowery) and Martin Lawrence (Marcus Burnett).

The Office Movers [Crave Original]

Crave release date: October 11th, 2024 (two episodes, new episodes on Fridays)
Genre: Comedy
Runtime: Six episodes (around 30 minutes each)

Two brothers reluctantly take over their father’s commercial office moving company in Toronto.

Brampton-born YouTubers Jae and Trey Richards are the creators and stars of the series.

Abbott Elementary (Season 4)

Disney+ Canada release date: October 10th, 2024 at 7am PT/10am ET (first episode, new episodes every Thursday, the morning after they premiere on ABC)
Genre: Mockumentary sitcom
Runtime: 22 episodes (22 minutes each)

The disruptive construction of a new golf course near Abbott leads the teachers to come up with creative solutions.

Abbott Elementary was created by Quinta Brunson (Quinta vs. Everything) and features an ensemble cast that includes Brunson, Tyler James Williams (Everybody Hates Chris), Janelle James (Black Monday), Lisa Ann Walter (The Parent Trap) and Sheryl Lee Ralph (It’s A Living).

The Menendez Brothers [Netflix Original]

Last month, Netflix’s popular Monsters: The Lyle and Eric Menendez Story dramatized the events of the titular killers, and now, the streamer has a documentary featuring the real brothers. In the film, both brothers talk about their highly-publicized murders of their parents.

Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft [Netflix Original]

Netflix Canada release date: October 10th, 2024
Genre: Animated action-adventure
Runtime: Eight episodes (around 30 minutes each)

Set after the events of the Eidos Montreal’s 2018 video game Shadow of the Tomb Raider, this series follows famed adventurer Lara Croft as she confronts her traumatic past while unravelling an ancient mystery.

Based on Crystal Dynamics’ Tomb Raider video game series of the same name, Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft was created by Tasha Huo (The Witcher: Blood Origin) and features the voices of Hayley Atwell (Agent Carter), Richard Armitage (Castlevania) and Allen Maldonado (Black-ish).

Killer Cakes [Amazon Original]

Matthew Lillard (Scream) hosts this baking show in which contestants work with the best horror special effects artists in Hollywood to make the most frightening cakes possible.

YouTube

War Game: The Making of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2

Original YouTube release date: October 3rd, 2024
Genre: Documentary
Runtime: 1 hour, 27 minutes

This was actually released last week, but we’re including it here to give it fresh visibility since it’s a notable for a couple of reasons. The documentary explores how video game developer GSC Game World’s efforts to make a sequel to fan-favourite S.T.A.L.K.E.R. quickly became something else entirely amid the war in Ukraine.
