Looks like the rumours over the past week were all correct.
Sony has officially announced the Xperia Tablet Z, its follow-up to the excellent Xperia Tablet S. The slim and light slate packs a 1.5Ghz Qualcomm APQ8064 quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage and an 8.1MP camera to go along with its 1920×1200 pixel “Reality Display”. This is the first Sony tablet with a resolution higher than 1280×800 and, alongside the company's Bravia Engine technology, should prove quite a potent combination.
The 6.9mm-thin tablet is waterproof and dustproof and weighs 495 grams, a remarkable 100 grams less than its predecessor. It's also over 3mm thinner but houses a 6000mAh battery, so we're hopeful battery life will improve, too. Along with standard WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, the Tablet Z boasts NFC and will come in black and white variants. It will launch with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and, like its smartphone counterpart, will be updated to 4.2 shortly after launch.
The Xperia Tablet Z is launching this spring in Japan, and we'd expect it to make its way across the pond some time in the second quarter. Sony is including optional LTE connectivity here, though no word on whether any Canadian carriers are picking it up.
