Roku OS 8.1 adds headphone sharing through companion app

The next Roku update is going to make watching TV quietly a breeze

Version 8.1 of Roku’s set-top box operating system, which begins rolling out in May, will allow up to four users to use the companion app to listen through headphones simultaneously.

The Roku app currently only lets one user watch TV while getting audio through their headphones. Once the next Roku update comes into play, up to four users can all watch the same thing and listen to the audio through the mobile app with headphones.

This feature is useful for people that live in shared spaces where they need to watch TV quietly, like an apartment or dorm.

Live news is also coming to Roku 8.1, though unfortunately it won’t arrive in Canada. Some U.S. news channels like ABC and Cheddar will begin broadcasting on Roku devices after the update in May.
