Surface Pro 4 firmware update finally adds Surface Dial support

Surface Dial

An upcoming Surface Pro 4 firmware update is finally bringing on-screen support for Microsoft’s Surface Dial accessory to the laptop-tablet hybrid device.

Microsoft first promised to bring the $130 CAD Surface Dial to the Surface Pro 4 back in 2016, with a release date set for early 2017 — this window has long since passed, however.

This new firmware update, set to arrive this week, lets the Bluetooth connected Surface Dial display contextual radial menus, allowing users to interact with the accessory directly on the Pro 4’s display.

That said, the latest version of the Surface Pro features dial support right out of the box. App support for the Dial remains relatively sparse, with even Photoshop’s built-in functionality still remaining relatively basic.

While the Surface Pro and Surface Pro 4’s display is small when compared to the Surface Studio, photographers and artists looking for a tactile way to adjust simple features like colour or brush size could find the accessory useful.
