Report: 1.211 billion mobile phones shipped in 2009, Apple increases market share by 6.2%

2009 was an interesting year to see how all the manufacturers reacted to the fluctuating economy. Gartner Research has released their annual report that gives a breakdown of the end results. Gartner states in their report that a total of 1.211 billion units were shipped in in 2009, this represents a a 0.9% decline from 2008 statistics.

The top 5 manufacturers in order of 2009 market share are as follows: Nokia, Samsung, LG, Motorola and Sony Ericsson. But Gartner also states that “Three of the top five mobile phone vendors experienced a decline in sales in 2009. The top five vendors continued to lose market share to Apple and other vendors, with their combined share dropping from 79.7 in 2008 to 75.3 per cent in 2009.” So what does Apple look like? Well, their OS market share increased 6.2% last year and now have a 14.4% market share. Staggering considering they were not considered to be competition a few years ago. Nokia still dominates with 46.9%, followed by Waterloo-based RIM with 19.9%.
