CRTC’s new interactive map reveals broadband coverage in Canada

Last month, the CRTC unveiled an online tool aimed at giving Canadians a convenient way to find the nearest wireless, TV, Internet and phone service providers.

Jean-Pierre Blais, chairman and CEO of the CRTC, said the goal of the service was to “help Canadians select service providers that make the most sense for their needs, their budgets and their realities.”

Today, ahead of the public hearings on basic telecommunications services next week, the CRTC has launched another tool that reveals the coverage of broadband internet service across Canada. This covers cable, DSL/fibre, fixed wireless and LTE networks and displays them using a map view.

There is no indication as to the cost of this build out but the coverage map seems to be developed by Gatineau, Québec-based CartoVista, formerly known as DBx GEOMATICS. The CRTC notes the map shows the availability of broadband Internet services “at or above the CRTC’s target speeds of 5 megabits per second (Mbps) for downloads and 1 Mbps for uploads as of end of 2014.”

On Monday, the CRTC will begin its public hearing on basic telecommunications services in Canada, specifically what telecommunications services Canadians consider necessary in the “digital economy,” and which services are relied on the most to communicate.

The map “gives a general view of Internet service availability and it is meant to provide context to the discussions that will take place during the hearing,” said the CRTC.
