Sony is announcing a mysterious new smartphone on August 3

Following a less than ideal showing during Sony’s most recent earnings call, the company’s mobile division has posted a teaser for a new phone on its Twitter account.

Based on the teaser (embedded below), it appears the company will release a new smartphone on August 3rd that features a high-powered camera.

According to Android Authority, the wording of the tweet seems to suggest that the company’s next smartphone will be the first of its own phones to feature the new high-end Exmor RS IMX230 camera sensor. This 21 megapixel sensor was announced by Sony last November, and it’s been in the process of making its way into a variety of high-end smartphones, including Motorola’s recently announced Moto X Style and Play, over the last couple of months.

One of the main selling points of the IMX230 is its ability to capture to 4K video at 30fps and 120fps slow motion footage at 720p.

What’s interesting about the potential inclusion of this sensor is that Sony typically doesn’t put its best product inside one of its own phones. Due to demand, the company usually sells its best sensors to more popular smartphone makers like Apple and Samsung.

Unless someone leaks the device between now and August 3rd, we’ll have to wait to find out the phone’s other specs. Thankfully, August 3rd is less than a week away.
