Supply of the iPhone 18 Pro may be constrained at launch due to wider component shortages.
According to Culpium, a lack of DRAM could make it harder to get the Apple handset, which is expected to be unveiled in September. While the publication notes that production of Apple’s A20 Pro processor is “progressing well,” there’s a backlog on the DRAM side. In total, the site reports that about US$1 billion worth of Apple processors are sitting around waiting for DRAM before the next phase of production can begin.
Culpium says Apple and its manufacturing partners are “confident that they can meet initial demand” but have concerns that post-launch inventory will quickly deplete.
What could make this issue worse is the fact that Apple is reportedly not planning to introduce a base iPhone 18 model this year. Instead, the company is expected to only debut the higher-end iPhone 18 models and its long-rumoured foldable iPhone Ultra during its usual September keynote. The base iPhone 18 and lower-cost Air 2, meanwhile, are said to be slated for 2027. Therefore, your only options for new iPhones this year will very likely be the (more expensive) iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max and iPhone Ultra.
At any rate, we won’t have to wait long to find out. The company is expected to hold this year’s fall iPhone event either on Wednesday, September 8 or Thursday, September 9, right after the Labour Day holiday. We should find out an exact date and time soon.
