Fido customers can now top-up their data through SMS

Fido has just made reaching your data limit a little less painful.

Following in the footsteps of parent company Rogers, the carrier is now offering its customers the ability to top up their data via SMS message.

If a subscriber reaches 90 percent of their data allotment, Fido will send a text message giving users two top-up options: $7 for 300MB or $15 for 1GB. If that fails to be enough, users can take advantage of this option up to three times per billing cycle.

This, Fido states, means that customers can get more data “without having to move to a new plan, or without having to pick up the phone to call us.”

While the latter part of the statement does indeed add value to the proposition, in many situations it is still less expensive for Fido customers to bump up to a different plan if they find themselves consistently breaching their data limits.

For instance, the difference between a Bring Your Own Phone (BYOP) plan with 1GB and 500 minutes, and a BYOP plan with 2GB and 1,000 minutes is only $10.

It is, however, an improvement on standard overage rates. At $5 per 250MB, 300MB would cost $10 and 1GB would cost $20.

Update: Fido has informed MobileSyrup that this feature is available for both Pulse and non-Pulse plans.
