During its annual developer conference today, Google announced that it will be bringing both offline turn-by-turn voice navigation and offline search to Maps.
Jen Fitzpatrick, vice president of engineering and product management, said, “With offline Maps, you won’t need to suck down expensive data or have super reliable connectivity every time you want to navigate somewhere… this will really create a better experience for the next billion users.”
The overall UI will stay the same, but the added functionality will allow users to search for specific locations (even taking advantage of auto-complete), view ratings and local reviews along with hours of operation, and other information that will enable them to “search and navigate the real world, online or offline.”
These features will arrive sometime “later this year.”
