March 22nd was the UN World Water Day 2012, and it was also the launch of a new iOS and Android app called Quench. Aimed at finding clean water in the Greater Toronto Area, it is a visual database of thousands of restaurants, cafes, water fountains and retailers that will fill your reusable water bottle for free.
Sponsored by The Bell New Media Fund, The Water Brothers TV Series and TVO, Quench fills a need for some users they didn’t even realize they had. In addition to searching for specific refill stations in your area, you can rate those places by cleanliness, accessibility and water temperature, and leave comments or suggestions. You can even upload photos to complete the visual guide.
According to the app’s designer Alex Gornicki, “Tap water is safer to drink than store-bought bottled water, and it’s 1-2000x more expensive to buy a bottle of water than it is to refill one using your own Toronto tap water!” I can attest to the deliciousness and high safety levels of Toronto’s tap water, and will definitely be pushing people to use the app instead of purchasing throwaway bottles.
“The Water Brothers is a TV Series that is broadcast and streamed online across Canada with TVO. The show is hosted and created by Alex and Tyler Mifflin, two real brothers from Toronto who travel the world to bring you the most current issues surrounding water, our most precious resource. Visit www.thewaterbrothers.ca“
As summer approaches and more Torontonians are getting outside, Quench is going to be an essential tool for preserving our environment and keeping excess plastic from our landfills.
Check out Quench in the iOS App Store and on the Google Play Store.
