Huawei announces its own smartphone-dependent VR headset

The increasingly crowded virtual reality space just added another competitor to the field.

On Friday, Huawei announced its own VR headset during a P9 launch event in Shanghai, China. Dubbed Huawei VR, the headset works a lot like Samsung’s own GearVR. That is, it doesn’t come with its own display; instead, users are required to slot in one of the company’s two recently announced flagship devices, the P9 and P9 Plus, into a space at the front of the headset.

The two phones were announced at an event in London, England last week, though neither currently have a Canadian release date. Likewise, the company has yet to announce pricing and availability for Huawei VR.

From a technical standpoint, Huawei VR includes a 360-degree sound field, a feature that isn’t available on other VR headsets currently on the market, according to the company. The headset isn’t glasses friendly, but its adjustable lenses can accommodate myopia of down to -7.00. There’s also a blue light filter to reduce strain on one’s eyes from using the device into the night.

Given the fact neither the P9 nor P9 Plus have been announced for Canada, it’s unlikely Huawei VR will come to Canada either.
