Koodo Mobile to increase rate plans by $5/month, will now include Call Display and Voicemail

Koodo Mobile has decided to increase their rate plans by $5/month. The change will go live tomorrow, February 3rd, and the major difference I can see is that all plans will now include Call Display and Voicemail – this usually this would run you $7/month each (or you could get the Call Display, Voicemail and Unlimited Messaging add-on for only $10/month). In addition, all plans still include Canada-wide calling, but have shifted towards per-minute billing, not per-second, and overage increases by 5 cents to 45 cents/minute.

Check for this tomorrow.
(Thanks tipster!)

    • You realize they’re including services for that price increase, something that would have cost you more than $5/month?

Koodo’s really been the only part of the big 3 initiating changes with pricing, going in the direction of wind/mobi and offering UL canada wide voice.

    • As long as you don’t change your rate plan to any of the new ones when they are released, you will still be on your current plan.

Same thing that if you are already paying for Call Display and Voicemail, you will still be paying for them when these plans are released.

  4. I also noticed that they removed the Unlimited after 7pm for the $20/month plan and the $35/month plan has been increased to $40. I hope they dont change the price of their add-ons as well. People should look twice before saying that this is a good thing…because this is basically them increasing rates.

    • Actually, looks like they just bumped everything up $5 and added in CID/VM. So the old $20 plan is now $25 (including ew after 7pm)

  5. Now THAT’s what i’m talking about! :O :D [note 1]

i would have bought BOTH features anyway! So i save $5, unless i add unlimited SMS, where there is no net price increase compared to the old plans. Maybe people can live with just 50 SMS, by using Messenger instead!

This will certainly give a weird feeling to some people, who for some reason don’t want these features or see it as the same price/a price increase. But for people like me, who don’t text that much, this will actually be a savings compared to the old plans. People who barely or don’t text should appreciate this, too.

Good job Koodo, but expect texters to be disappointed. People who talk on the phone or surf on the web with no texting needs, however, will more than likely be happy with these plan changes!

[note 1] except for removing 50 minutes in the $30 plan, abandonment of per-second billing and overage price increase. i did the math, and it turns out to save me 25% of airtime with per-second. So if i would normally talk 200 per-minute minutes, it would go down to 150 minutes with per-second billing. So that’s a disappointment, but at least an unlimited plan remains on the table.

    • i would definitively tell Koodo, when i cancel before spring, that i don’t welcome the new per-minute plans with artificial price increases. Per-second was an advantage Koodo had over Virgin. Now Virgin will have the advantage of coupons and $5/month discount for SIM only accounts. No more $15/month plan will also be a show stopper.

    • Not great news. These are costlier plans than what they have now. Right now, its $25 for 150 mins + 5 pm calling. That plan just got nerfed beyond belief. 100 mins and $30?? wow. Also, now its per minute billing, which is a ripoff.

    • Win some, lose some. Koodo/TELUS usually has a way to activate customers on old plans, upon request so you may want to try that! The bonus 50 minutes PLUS the per-second billing were a big advantage!

It’s up to you. Besides the calling advantages i’ve listed above: do you want just caller ID and voice mail, or is texting important to you? Koodo’s new plans may offer a discount on calling features, but gone are the better days of per-second billing.

Some examples of TELUS offering me older plans:
      * 1 GB at $30/month with $6.95 SAF and 75¢ 911 (saves $2/month)
      * 3 GB + unlimited local calling at $55/month (saves $5/month)

YMMV. Give it a try if you have a SIM card around! :)

    • Agreed. Per-minute billing is the big shocker here. This takes away one (perhaps *the*) big advantage of Koodo over Virgin.

In case it’s not obvious, I think the change to per-minute billing sucks big-time! I, for one, will be reconsidering the future of the 4 lines I have with Koodo, as Koodo does now seem no longer interested in being the low cost alternative.

    • Yes. From everywhere in Canada to everywhere in Canada, incoming or outgoing – same price. No extra. The only thing that changes is the tax – you might be charged the tax applicable in the province where you make the call.

When I travel to other provinces with my Koodo phone, I always have a few cents of taxes form the other provinces on the bill. But that is fine for me.

  23. This is a HUGE price increase. Not the 5$, but the change to per-minute-billing. That means that over their affected customer base the included minutes are actually reduced by 25-30%, maybe even more. The shorter calls you make, the more minutes you will lose. Per-Second-Billing was one of the main reasons why I chose Koodo back in 2010. It was a close race with Virgin.

And the cost for extra minutes is going up again – only recently it was increased from 35 to 40 Cents. And now another 5 Cents. Most things become cheaper if you buy more – with Koodo, they become more expensive.

Even on the unlimited plan you can be affected: If you make phone calls to destinations abroad. These phone calls are usually shorter than local calls, so the price increase through the per-minute-billing hurts even more there.

If Shaw and Telus merged then they would be able to keep up.

  26. So for $50 I get unlimited calls anywhere in Canada plus $5 for unlimited text. Verizon in the states charges $90 for unlimited talk and text! And even T-Mobile, the cheapest of the national carriers in the states, charges $60. For Canadians that don’t live where Wind/Mobi/Public operate, this is not a bad deal.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 4 Thumb down 1

    Posted by cheenachatze | February 3, 2012, 4:28 am
    • T-Mobile has a lot of better deals than this!
      * Unlimited text, unlimited 2G speed Internet, 5 GB full-speed Internet, and 100 US-wide minutes for only $30/month, no contract! (the Internet is like WIND)
      * Unlimited talk, text and 2G speed Internet for $50/month on prepaid! (includes 100 MB at full speed; add 5 GB for $20/month more)

All these plans are prepaid, so no credit check or annual contract required, plus they include caller ID, call waiting and voice mail. ANY T-Mobile plan beats Koodo, which charges extra for Internet ($10/month for 100 MB and $70.96/month for 5 GB!) In the USA, the plans are actually decent, even with national carriers.

The thing to like about these Koodo plans is that they include caller ID and voicemail instead of charging extra. What’s not to like is per-minute billing (they conform to other providers rather than set their own trend with per-second billing), less minutes in the $30/month plan, and less feeling of a value (no $15 plan) while those plans feel pricey. They can include caller ID, charge $5/month less for all the plans, but exclude voice mail. Those plans are bittersweet at the very least. WIND, please provide a provincial network in all of Ontario!

I’ve been with Koodo for 3 years and I’m happy with what I have, don’t need to change anything and I retain all the benefits.

    • It is not just a lack of savings in the example cited above – it’s a regression. Pre-change, that was 50 minutes billed by the second, post-change it’s 50 minutes billed by the minute. So, it is an effective decrease in minutes.

The city koodo is $35 bucks includes Voicemail & Caller Id and if you want to add Messaging its a $5 add on, you save $7 than the plan they had before $35 plus $12 equals $47. now its only $40. And who cares if they changed to per minute calling, just get the city koodo and you don’t have to worry about your minutes cause its unlimited. and if you do long distance, just get the canada wide calling for $50 and its unlimited. For crying out loud people stop whining bout your minutes anymore, there’s now unlimited plans.

Its no LD within your bucket. Their Tab is a longer than term contract and now per minute billing instead of per second! Are you kidding me? this is a huge price increase.
And then they put a lipstick on Eltabador and show it like a kitty!
What I like about fido is their consistency. They give you what you need. Unlimited text in a $20 plan is sweet. I dont call on my phone anymore and dont need call display and voice mail.

There may be 10 people complaining about it. but there’s millions of customers that asked for it. So suck it up you 10 people. And by the way your plan doesn’t change unless you change to the new plan yourself. There’s nothing to complain about, just don’t change your plan, plans are grandfathered. These new changes are for new customers or customers changing their plans. If you don’t like it keep your granfathered plan pretty simple

    • I agree that these changes could help some current or prospective customers save money – if they don’t text much. I’m on the $20/mo plan (that existed before Feb 3) and have the $10 CID/VM/text add-on. I’m considering switching to the new $25 plan to save $5/month as I don’t send many texts and I would still stay under 100 minutes for daytime usage with by-the-minute billing.

  46. I opened an account with Koodo 2 weeks ago and they pull this??? I’ll be switching to Fido. If anyone here is thinking of switching to Fido, tell them you are not happy with Koodo’s recent change to bill per minute. The more great feedback Fido hears the better for us consumers.

  47. Koodo has sh*t plans and they make people think they are getting a good deal because there is no contract. Actually it is a contract, just without a term dont let the EL tabador fool you. Yes the big 3 are bad but koodo is no better just a pawn used by telus to attract customers. Retentions offers at either bell or telus are better just go month to month, if youre in a city with wind or mobilicity go with them screw the big 3. Nothing will change among big 3 or their flanker brands until there is an influx of customers to the new entrants.

  48. *sorry I meant retentions offers are better at either rogers or bell. Telus has quite sh*t retentions offers as well.

  50. I have the $15 month plan for 50 min and pay the extra $6 for voice mail. I was looking at the new $20 deal, 50 min including call display and voice mail. I didn’t switch. I was checking my account on Koodo website and checked out the $20 plan. I noticed the list of features mentioned’call display outbound’. Does that mean the call display they are including only shows your phone number to other cell phones you call and it won’t show incoming phone numbers?

  51. Avoid billing by-the-minute. It’s what will cost you more in the end. Calls by-the-minute are on average charged for 9% more time. You’ll run your plan out sooner.

Bell and Clearnet had by-the-second back in 1995. Anyone could switch to it.

  52. Koodo Is gone down the drain with newer plans. Read the fine print folks. perminute billling. When your perminute billing its basicly a glorifed plan thats exactly like a preopaid service. YA know.

Prepaid service gets voice mail and call display!
