Could it really be happening? 3-year contracts on the way out? Probably not, but TELUS has started to sell select smartphones on a 2-year contract for $0. It’s part of a promo they have going on now for the big Q4 holiday push and although it’s not the latest and greatest iPhone or Android handsets, it’s a start. According to the internal doc we received it states that the LG Optimus Black, Samsung Galaxy S Fascinate 4G, Samsung Nexus S, HTC Desire HD and the iPhone 3GS 8GB have all been knocked down to $0 on a 2-year term. Something to think about, and TELUS notes that “The competition has yet to follow suit, which gives TELUS a definitive competitive advantage.”
(Thanks tipster!)
The customer wins “0 quality Android device” … really? Hope that’s a typo lol.

Just got off the phone wiht Loyalty about willing to renew a 2 yr contract with Telus but they want a minimum $50 plan.
Please ADD IT TO THE TITLE OF THE ARTICLE. That sale has been alive for over ten days, go to the site and it works now. Offer expires on Dec 24 as per the small print on the website.

Think about it:
BEFORE: you could get a $40 plan and add $10 data plan that you could remove after one yr (or before paying $200) and then continue for one yr MORE paying $40 per month
50*12=600 + 40*12=480 Total $1080
NOW: you have to have a $50 TOTAL minimum for $24 months, this increases the guaranteed revenue for the operator. More expensive for you. If you are paying $50 or more, then it doesn’t make a difference.
50*24= $1200

If ONLY 3 year contract were on the way out. These devices are old, they aren’t new devices.
3 years will stay until government regulation steps in. Sad to say, not even Wind has their TAB expire in 2 years, they themselves are still 3 years before they wipe your TAB of what you owe.
This country is pathetic sometimes.

Agreed on the 3 yr contracts: Down with them!
The offer requires min $50 plan. If you are looking for Android:
Optimus one at Futureshop $90
Samsung Ace at Koodo $150 (or lower)
Nexus S unlocked at Newegg $350.
Sooner or later the customers wil find out that you can get a phone anywhere and sign..or not with the operator that gives you the best plan.

Nice to see some free phones on 2-years contracts. With any luck it’s a first step toward eventually dropping 3-years contracts like in the US. (Hey, a guy can dream)

Or do you mean bringing it back to 10 years ago when all contracts were 2-years or less until Robbers decided to start 3-years then everyone followed suit?

The 4 Android devices dropped in price about a week ago. The iPhone is new to that list, though, as far as I know.
Curve 9300 is also on that list without minimum rate plan requirement as well, thought I don’t know if I’d call it “high tier”.

I wish I could get my DHD contract reduced to 2 years.. I still have 27 months and I even paid $150..

The question is why are they doing that? To try to take away from Roger and Bell?
It should be noted that 2 years is the “device upgrade” so the telco forcing 3 year contract is already to keep people (as they don’t have any other mean)

BOTTOM LINE: while most of us wont go for this deal, it kind of is noteworthy that this is the first time we are seeing some form of 2 year contract.
while it isn’t across all devices, it has to start SOMEWHERE. and this is a starting point. may be nothing now, but it is something.
and no reason to be critical or negative. again, i have said it before, the only thing that will make you guys happy is if the big 3 started PAYING YOU money to use a cell phone that they give you for free.

Not that I’m a fan of Bell but its offering the Motorola Atrix for $0 on a 2-year contract. Hardly a competitive advantage.

is bell giving the iPHone 3GS on a 2 year? if it’s not, then yes, it is a competitive advantage for Telus.
similarly, Bell has a competitive advantage in that it sells the Atrix period.
depends on how you look at it.
you lose.

The thing I don’t like with Telus is they keep the “reg price” of the phones and only discount on the service contract.
The Nexus S is not worth $500, but now they will “give” it to you for $0, which is $500/24= $20.83 instead of 500/36 = $13.89.For sure if you cancel on the 2 year term, you’re screwed. But the intend is for you to stay right…
At $50 a month, that’s $15 over some sick plans from new entrants. So $15 over 2 years is $360. You can buy a Nexus S outright from Wind for $380.

Telus offer is better since they have coverage.

Buy the phone outright from Newegg for $380, then sign up with one of the sub brand and you will save a lot more than this “seem to be” a good deal!

The only phone worth it on that list would be the Nexus S. At least it will be supported with timely updates for the next year or so.

why are people complaing about this and saying its a ripoff? the move to 2 year contracts is great and hopefuly all companys will do it with all there phones. but i got my phone in august 2010 $0 2 year plan with telus so there probaly not gonna do it with all phones for a while it was a promotion then too. Also how is it a ripoff to buy a phone on contract and have to pay $50 a month? Telus’s $50 plans give you 1gb of data 400min and unlimited text with some other features. They also have a 55 promo plan that has 5gb. bell/rogers plans are ripoffs though.

I would switch to Telus if they offered 2 year plans instead of 3 year ones. it’s the law in britain, it’s common policy in the US. It should be 2 year plans here. My HTC Legend is really starting to feel old with its 3.2″ screen

Just because it’s a “law” in another country, doesn’t mean Canada has to adopt it. Texas has the death penalty, in Thailand there’s public caning, should be allow corporal punishment in Canada also?

Decent devices on the list, HTC Desire HD is no slouch for sure either on network or in the phone… kinda wish mine hadn’t taken a swim in the toilet, but then again if it hadn’t I wouldn’t be rocking the Amaze 4G now.

almost forgot, the folks who keep saying to just get a plan with one of the new entrants… yeah moot point for anyone who frequents outside of wind / mobilicity zones… I don’t need unlimited voice and 1 gig of data more than does it for me, I don’t need unlimited… besides, I’m not a fan of throttling my data, and if a carrier’s way of keeping the network open for everyone is to charge more to the people who bog it down with tons and tons of data usage… well that’s their way. I’ve hit my cap ONCE.

I’m not a fan of the Big 3 but I think this is a move in the right direction for Telus. Rogers and Bell have decided to squeeze Telus out recently due to the convergence of media and you can see it quite well with what they did to Telus in terms of sport coverage licensing (in the courts now).
Maybe Telus is breaking ranks because of the greed of Rogers and Bell – hopefully they can pull a Vader and come a little closer to the ‘light’ side (2 year contracts, lower prices and do away with all the superfluous fees that don’t make any sense).

I have a feeling when Canadian carriers actually announce 2-year contracts & they reduce a $649 smartphone down to $249 on the 2-year term, people here will still complain that they’re getting ripped off because it’s not $0 as they expected..

Leave it to Telus to call the iphone 3GS and Desire HD ‘high-tier’. Why oh why does my carrier have to have the worst phone choices of the big three by such a huge margin?
