Rogers to release Android-powered LG GT540 & LG Neon 2… dummy phones arrive

A couple more devices will be launching soon at Rogers: The LG GT540 and the LG Neon 2. Checking out the image that was sent into us shows that the dummy phones have already started to arrive at Rogers locations. Both looking ripe for a back-to-school crowd.

Update: According to the comments below, the LG GT540 is an Android device that is also known as the “Optimus”. This comes with OS 1.6, 3-inch touchscreen display (resolution of 320 x 480), 3 megapixel camera, holds up to 32GB with a microSD card, Wi-Fi. No word on pricing or an official release date yet.

The LG Neon 2 is a follow-up to the original Neon. This will most likely hit the shelves at Fido too. This has a fully QWERTY keyboard, 2.4 inch touchscreen (240 x 320 pixels). We’ve got limited spec info and no release date yet… and the only price point we’ve been informed of is that it’ll be $29.99 on a 3-year.

  1. When Rogers says that lots of android is on it’s way, then show this, I get a little worried. I really hope they manage to land some higher-end devices.

  2. It’s not all about the higher end devices. I like the fact that they’re releasing Android devices targeted towards average users.

But yeah, if Rogers wants to keep up, I think some higher end Android devices are in need.

  4. What is hilarious is that some fools on here are screaming over and over again everyday `how supposedly corrupt Rogers is for launching Chat-R with no data even though it has no real connections to their main brands simply based on the fact they are stuck in 3 year contracts because they can’t afford expensive phones or want cheap data to play on social sites all day.Yet, will be the first to sign up for these Androids whether they can afford them or not just to impress their friends or a new one as soon as it comes out…however most of them have no real IMPORTANT use for them and they want their opinions to count.

    Funny crap!

  5. @ Bob I completely agree that there has to be a spectrum of devices and that lower end or average devices are included in that mix, but right now Rogers is competing against the other devices in its line-up while offering little competition to the high end Android phones other carriers have. As a customer under a Rogers contract, quickly approaching upgrade time, I admit to jealousy when Bell announces a Galaxy S variant and Telus will most likely getting a Droid X/2 variant as a follow up to the Milestone. Other than a vague statement, Rogers customers don’t have anything concrete to look forward to.

  7. From the information I have, the GT540 on Rogers is going to be released running Android 1.6 not 2.0.

  11. God, I hope they don’t send the NEON 2 to Fido.

The Neon was enough of a disaster. 95% of all phones sent in for repairs at my store are Neons. Sheesh. Learn from your mistakes, and get rid of LG products.

  12. I’m in Europe right now, and that LG is already available here. I played around with it, and let me tell you – it’s really nothing special. Just another low end phone, the camera isn’t very good either (even though its just a 3mp)

  14. Rogers really needs to stop with all the cheap android phones. I’m on the brinks of switching to Telus or Bell… if they don’t release a decent variation of the Galaxy S, I’m going to buy out my contract and switch.

  15. Rogers ended up being the worst choice for hardware. How come Rogers missed HTC Desire? I am being forced to switch to Telus just because that phone….wake up Rogers!

  16. The North American model whereby a particular phone is almost always tied to a particular carrier is amazingly consumer unfriendly. If I were benevolent dictator I’d outlaw these types of arrangements. Let the carriers compete on the services they provide, not on how good they are at making anti-consumer deals with the phone manufacturers.

  18. There’s a Rogers website called Rogers Redboard which allows their customers to interact with the company itself on various things they have coming down the pipeline. I encourage anyone reading this to hop on over and tell Rogers directly about your concerns regarding a high end Android phone.

  19. Rogers is just like AT&T, both make their money on iPhones at this point and just keep enlisting crappy Android devices.
