Bell 6GB $30/month data plan on the table for the iPhone 4?

Perusing through an internal doc that was sent to Bell employees titled “Apple iPhone 4 – Technical description” and “Introducing the iPhone 4″ it highlights features such as FaceTime video calling, Retina display, HD video recording, 5-megapixel camera. There are no prices listed yet for the device but it does show a new offer that people will be interested in.

It reads “In addition, the launch of the iPhone will be supported by new offers that will be available July 30 – September 30, 2010″ and looks like Bell is offering up a 6GB for $30 month plan and an upsell for iPad owners:

“Clients can receive 6GB of data and unlimited WiFi at Starbucks for only $30 a month on any voice plan. For an additional  $10 a month, clients can share this data with their iPad.”

There’s a couple more pages to the internal doc after the break

  1. The unlimited WiFi at Starbucks doesn’t count for much anymore really. Given that now EVERYONE gets unlimited WiFi at Starbucks.

  2. I wonder if this will be for all smart phones? And if Telus will follow suit? That would be super nice instead of these 500MB plans.

  3. For $10/month users can share data with their iPads. This is huge. Actually, it should be free, but it’s still better than what other wireless companies are offering.

      If it’s 10$ for another sim-card … that’s “ok” for me.

  10. As much as I want this to be offered for Android phones it definitely won’t be. With the reduced signal from holding your iPhone 4 you’ll never reach even 2 GB of data used.

  14. This data plan is not just for iPhone 4. It’s available for all smartphone and BlackBerry. This data feature includes Tethering as well. So $30 bucks for 6GB data includes tethering! Or add $10 to share the data if you have iPad. Bell is becoming awesomer…
    * It’s not available until 30th this month and this feature is limited time only.

  19. Honest question. . .what stops me from using this with another smartphone?

Right now the cost to add data is something like 25 bucks for 512MB and 35 bucks for GB.

If it was possible to use this with a non-iPhone this would be perfectly perfect.

    • Well, fom what I’ve heard so far, this will not just be for the iPhone 4…So you could also use it for the Samsung Galaxy S or any other smartphone Bell has, that you activate between July 30th – September 30th.

But, if this is only for the iPhone 4, then thats a good thing for them to get more people on Bell for the iPhone 4, but also alienates everyone else who gets a smartphone thats doesnt have an Apple logo on it.

    • So far, Bell offers something like that. You can get a $30 voice plan and then add a $20 Bundle and you could get the following for $50/month:
150 anytime minutes (100 local and 50 bonus)
unlimited call & text to 5 ppl OR double your local minutes
unlimited nights and weekends Starting at 6PM (only on 3yr)
unlimited text, picture and video messaging
      50MB of data
      Call Display
      Message Center
      Unlimited NHL

But you have to sign up for a 3yr contract to get the early evenings and weekend time and to get the bonus 6 months unlimited local calling. I’ve been looking at different bundles I can make with Telus, Rogers and Bell, and so far, this is about the best one I’ve made thats not a smartphone plan, but can be used for smartphones cause its at least ($50/month)

      Hope that helps..

    • Have you ever used an iPhone? Or do you have WiFi 24/7? iPhone’s are Data hungry devices. I’m on my HTC Magic way more than I was on my iPhone 3G and I use a 3rd less data, even with widgets and syncing.

  21. According to the Stiftung Warentest, only a touch of a finger over the antenna gap in the bottom left corner is enough for the iPhone 4 to lose up to 90 percent of the signal. And, depending on the strength of thе network signal, that can easily lead to dropped calls. As for web browsing, Internet connection gets “painfully” slow when you position your hand over the soft spot.

  22. Everyone freaks out over assumptions yet again. I didn’t see ANYWHERE in that Bell document that states the 6GB plan is only for iPhones…lol. Doesn’t anyone understand basic marketing?

Release the 6GB plan for a major phone release and promote it as such, sure. But it has never been said that ANY data plan is only for one phone. That’s like worrying whether your voice plan is for iPhone only. It doesn’t work like that. Your voice and data plans are attached to your sim card and go into any phone you want. Period.

    • It wouldn’t surprise me if it was only available to iphone 4 purchases on a 3 year contract. So yeah you could use it with another smartphone, as long as you bought that other smartphone at full price in addition to the 199 or 299 for the iphone with the 3 year contract. Also this is a minor point but you’d need an adapter to use the micro sim with pretty much any current smartphone (other than of course the iphone 4)

  23. @Khav Yes that is true, as Fido did that for a while too. It’s to drive sales of whatever smartphone they’re pushing at the time. Has nothing to do with some sort of technical limitation or data block limiting it only to one type of phone.

Many Fido CX simply renewed for the 3GS so they could get the 6GB plan, and then sold the iPhone to buy what they really wanted. The rule about buying the iPhone was hardly enforced anyways.

  26. The new iphone is out of my league, but completely unlocked is a great development. You can get yourself a pretty good full powered computer with a grand.

The offer of 6 gigs for 30 beans looks good depending on the fine print, any crippling of ports and tethering, streaming and so forth. It would have to be like dsl or cable or it’s a no go with me. I agree with an earlier poster, there’s no starch left in offering free wi-fi at branded locations, it’s free anyway and there’s been tons of free wi-fi available for years. The number of small bakeries and coffee shops going to wi-fi is getting huge.

  27. If this is available without contract for those of us who intend to buy our iPhones outright… it’s a big deal. Last I saw the only difference between no contract / 3 yr contract is the better evenings/weekends. I’d be willing to lose that in exhange for no contract.

  28. This is big! Specially the 10$ share plan with ipad, telus usually follows with the traditionnal “in response to the competition” but regrettably they dont have the billing module which enables data polling….. Maybe this will push them to spend a few bucks.

  31. If history is anything to go by we can expect Telus, Rogers and Fido (possibly even Virgin) to offer the same plan. Rogers/Fido in the past have offered this plan for all smartphones (during the promotional period) including BBs. BTW: it is not a plan in itself, but rather a data add-on on its own contract. So a separate voice component must be chosen which means a rather basic plan will go to about $70-$90 per month. Nothing surprising really.

  32. Come to think of it, even more interesting would be to know if we can add this data package on an existing smartphone account (say an iPhone 3GS or a Motorola Droid). Now that’d be sweet!

  33. Question, i am hoping someone with can clarify. I am currently under contract with Bell on a Iphone 3gs. Using a smartphone combo plan $50/month which has 500Mb of data. Could I drop my plan down to a $30/month voice plan, then add the $30/6g option with 10$ IPAD sharing features. The Boy Genius report doc shows a $35 activation fee, but I am assuming this is for new customers. I have a unactivated Bell IPAD microsim. If I do this, my total monthly spend will increase so I do think I can change may plan in anyway I want as long as I keep my voice plan, and/or I have had my $50/plan which had data for a year or more. Thoughts anyone. Also, the offer says it is until September. I certainly hope it is just the window to sign up, not that after september you can’t share data bucket between the devices anymore….
