New entrant Public Mobile opened their doors in Toronto and Montreal back on March 18th. On this date they announced their $40 Unlimited Talk and Text plans and offered a promo to anyone who signed up before their network went live free unlimited Canadian free long for life. Basically a $5 a month savings. They were supposed to go live mid-May but delayed the launch due to network build issues.
We sent an e-mail to Public Mobile via their website about specific launch dates other than the late May for Toronto and late June for Montreal. They replied with the following: “Our network will be launching in Toronto on May 26th and in Montreal on June 25th. For a limited time, customers who sign up ahead of the network launch will receive free unlimited Canadian long distance for life. After launch, the cost for unlimited Canadian long distance will be $5 per month.”
So when Public flips the switch on will you be hopping on board and giving them a go?
Public Mobile officially closing down their network in Toronto on June 26th, Montreal June 27th..

Unless they change their plans, there isn’t any value in going with them over WIND or Mobilicity.
If you just want Talk, Mobilicity has them beat, and same with text. Even Talk and text is cheaper at Mobilicity and WIND is the same $40, but both of them include Call Display, but Public Mobile is still going with the old archaic method of charging for it.

Only $5 promotion seems quite stingy and mean … comparing it with Wind’s $150 switch credit and 50% off for the first 6 months

unless wind makes serious changes with their network then, mobilicity and public have them beat, public just needs more plans with better better features, at the end of the day i would go with public, just for the long distance.. winds roaming charges are too whack, and moiblicity looks like they will be bought out by a big company before it happens to wind or public…public just might be the canadian version of metro pcs….look how they rocked the american markets

@david dwyer The difference being, Metro PCS phones don’t turn into paper weights if you go 5 minutes from home, not to mention their $40 includes not only talk & text, but web as well, a service Public has said it has no plans to pursue.
As for Wind, it never ceases to amaze me how people seem to think 25¢/minute (which includes LD) roaming is outrageous. Let’s not forget, you don’t pay roaming anywhere Wind has coverage, that can even be in another province! So their “local calling area” (to use the incumbents’ term, is far larger than the ever-shrinking LCA of Robelus. With Robelus, go outside their much smaller local calling area, and you pay 35¢/minute. I won’t even get into US roaming charges (480% higher on TELUS).
Sorry, I’m not trying to be a Wind apologist, there are enough of them around. Certainly, Wind has issues to deal with, but putting out misleading information helps no one.

Stop hating on Public Mobile, especially when comparing to Mobilicty. Sure this applies to Toronto, but look at it’s other major city, Montreal. Considering WIND isn’t available in Montreal, Public is actually an amazing option for us Montrealers.

I agree with Tom, I don’t see that Public are an option for me locally compared to WIND/Mobilicity but for Montrealers the offering is a great one especially considering the lack of options that they have over there.
