Shaw planning for initial wireless launch late 2011

Calgary-based Shaw Communications released their Q2 results and many people are interested in what will be happening with their wireless plans.

Shaw won 18 licences and spent $189 million during the Canadian Wireless Spectrum Auction and today CEO & Vice Chair Jim Shaw stated “We are advancing our strategy to offer a competitive wireless offering and are now planning for an initial launch in late 2011. Accordingly, we are accelerating our Wireless capital spend and expect to invest approximately $100 million in fiscal 2010. The investment in this new business will primarily be funded by cash on hand.”

More competition is on the way…

  2. Do you think Shaw would include a cell phone package with its bundle savings?

  4. Over the long term I expect Shaw to be one of the most important new entrants. However over the short term I expect they will find wireless to be an extremely difficult venture. Competing in wireless is unlike anything else Shaw has ever done.

They should acquire Wind and kill two birds with one stone: accelerate their entry and put Wind out of its misery.

  5. Shaw doesn’t have enough capital to buy Wind.

  6. I kinda hope they DO have contracts. TWO YEAR CONTRACTS! Like the REST of the WORLD.
Because we need someone to put pressure on the big three to go back to the TWO year system.

  7. Abhik is dumb – they can take on debt to buy Wind if they so liked. However, the real stumbling block are the regulatory issues that will not allow consolidation till at least 5 years anyways.

Videotron will be the most important of the new entrants.

Shaw will no doubt include wireless in their bundle – that IS the point.

  8. wind have come a long way since December…..I hoe they make a dent in Rogers and Bellus’ profits, so they will start making plans more affordable
