Well Rogers has crippled my HTC Magic with a forced update that stole my root access and downgraded me to Android 1.5, so I’ll be happy to kiss them goodbye and pick up a Milestone.

Planning to buy an unlocked Milestone and use Rogers’ network. Any downsides to this plan that I should be aware of? My first time buying an unlocked phone so a little nervous. How do OS upgrades work with an unlocked phone?

midtoad,
If you insist on switching from Rogers then buy the milestone outright, unlock it, and switch to Bell. If you think Rogers causes headaches then Telus will cause you severe migranes. It will be well worth the extra $$$ to not ever have to deal Telus. Everyone I know that I have warned away from Telus and ignored my advice have regretted it and payed the $400 early cancellation to get away from them.

I’m locked in with Telus for another year and a half. I was hoping Telus would but out my remaining contract if I went with them and picked up the Milestone. Telus says there’s no promotion in place that will allow them to do so at the moment. Does anyone know if I were to purchase a Milestone, if it would function on Rogers network?

I want one!!
But will hold back and wait to see if the rumoured Nexus Two with keyboard comes true by May.
If not, the Milestone is close behind a Dell Mini 5.

Too bad Motorola crippled the Milestone so it cannot be rooted. Supposively to protect the users but interestingly if that were true, why wouldn’t they do the same for the Droid, a nearly identical phone?

Too bad Rogers, you just lose another loyal user.
This is the “Milestone” for me to switch carrier.

Probably because the Droid was a “with Google” phone and Google had more say in the user experience and the ability to mod.
The Milestone may just be a “motorola phone” (versus a google experience phone).
Important for people to recognize this! Especially if you think you’re going to just flash whatever you want on to your new “Google” phone.

planning on getting one of these bad boys the day it comes out. I bricked my htc dream so I need a new android phone. Gonna have to get it unlocked so I can put it on bell.
as for the rooting, personally I don’t think its a big deal. Sure it sucks.. But tonly reason I rooted my dream was because it wasn’t gonna be updated. Since this is basically the latest os and will get updated there’s not much need for it at the moment. Might change my mind if the app limit if I hit it…. Might need apps2sd

I am also getting out of Rogers for this phone.
Then unlock it and go to either Telus, Bell or Virgin.

@brad: Curious if you’ve tried the 911 update on your HTC Dream… it got mine out of a bricked state (although now it’s stuck on 1.5, which is almost as bad….)

Very Excited about getting the Milestone. My phone died in January and I’ve been waiting for its release before getting a new phone.
@brad
The Milestone can be rooted. I watch video of a germany milestone being rooted back in Janurary.

@Michael The milestone may (MAY) not be able to be rooted, as people have wrote that the Telus firmware team ( or something of the sort) were working on a fix for the exploit. (POSSIBILITY MAY NOT BE TRUE POSSIBILITY!!!!!!!)
Also, keep in mind, that if the “cool” surprise is not bootloader, you cannot install custom roms on the Milestone. (Im pretty sure it also means it cannot be overclocked because you need bootloader to download the overclocking software.) I see no other advantages of rooting the phone other than being able to download paid apps ( as according to this website : http://www.androidincanada.ca/android-apps/when-can-we-buy-android-apps-in-canada/ ) As showed in this websites review of the telus motorola milestone, as of now, you cannot download paid apps from android market. “Coolness” ? I guess that “coolness” means locking someone to a three year contract to a phone with an operating system that will be outdated (compared to the States getting OTA 2.1 upgrade 1Q) the minute they sign the contract, with a company that has no intention of bringing their customers the same upgrades. Thats “Telus Cool”

I’m confident that I’ll be dropping Rogers and my BlackBerry Pearl 8130 for this phone and Telus’ new network.
My BB’s microSD slot no longer recognizes cards; a recent 2 days stuck in my car at way below freezing has crippled the battery; the BB is slow too and I can’t stand the browser.
I don’t care about being able to root the phone, and I’d prefer to only download free apps from the Android market. So I’m sold, as long as I get to touch the phone first!
