Don’t count DAVE out… they just got an extra $75 million

daveadJust because there’s Rogers, Bell, TELUS and now WIND… there will be more competition coming down the pipe soon. Dave Wireless will be changing their name when they officially launch, but that’s not the news. They have secured another massive amount of money.

A couple months ago they announced that ING infused they with $125 million in long-term financing, and now DAVE has raised another $75 million in additional capital from Canadian investors GMP Securities L.P. and National Bank Financial Inc.

Dave Dobbin, president of DAVE Wireless stated “We are on track to bring competition to Canadian wireless consumers in early 2010 with our state-of-the-art Ericsson 3G network. Raising an additional $75 million for continued growth will significantly enhance our position in the market.”

The confirmed date is still a vague “early 2010″ but we think it’s coming real soon. The initial launch cities are: Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Ottawa.

(Thanks Sheryl!)

    1. Besides Quebecor (Videotron) who got licenses in Quebec? And what’s happening with the Quebec licenses?

    2. DAVE’s board of directors looks a who’s who of Canadian business leaders. It’s no surprise that they are succeeding at raising capital while taking a low-key, “Canadian” approach to launching the service. I won’t be surprised to see a “distinctly Canadian” flavour when the brand-name and advertising roll out, in contrast to the we-know-who foreigners.

    3. I wasn’t overly happy with the WIND plans, way too expensive for decent voice/texting/data… Unlimited is so stupid… so DAVE is worth looking into now.

    4. If they are somewhere in between what WIND and the big three are offering, they will have huge success here.

    5. It’s all about coverage for me; I like WIND mobile but I am well outside their GTA ‘home zone’, so if DAVE can offer cheap plans in my area I will definitely have a look.

Not holding my breath though to be honest.

    6. Wind plan is not for me: Waiting for Dave & Public

      I am not a teenager, I don’t need unlimited plan. I have phone @home & @work.

Wind plan doesn’t fit my need. Dave can get user who is looking for a decent plan in $20-25 range.

    8. Yeah, I just posted a comparison on my web site; I don’t need unlimited – I’m happy with 250 text messages. So when you factor that in Wind’s not so cheap compared to Bell et al.

Direct comparisons are totally impossible, but if you start with what you need to take the minimum from each carrier to cover you then you’ll have a viable comparison.

    9. Actually i think there is public mobile in Quebec with voice only plans and only 10Mhz Band…

Also all the big 3 have AWS bands they haven’t used yet (but that doesn’t bring any competition).

So, yeah, I think we’re stuck until next summer here!

I hope Wind and Dave eventually join the Quebec market but considering how big Quebecor is and how they have bidden with such a monopolistic aim, I’m not so confident ;-/
