TELUS cuts 125 jobs due to “hotly competitive” market

teluslogoLast week Rogers slashed 900 jobs across the country and Telus has joined them and cut 125 jobs.

TELUS Spokesperson Shawn Hall said the job cuts are from the business solutions division and are Management level employees. “We know these are difficult changes for people…With the recession other businesses are experiencing layoffs, some businesses are shutting down, and there are fewer phone customers…The telecommunications industry is hotly competitive at the moment and is rapidly changing. The challenges are continuing and we’ll continue to adapt to them.”

  1. Just goes to show you how ruthless these companies are. They’d probably off their own mother if they could. Job cuts after just emerging from a recession and a few weeks before Christmas. Could it be that these companies are buying time before they begin to jump ship?

  2. Telus is a great company, but is it’s worst enemy.
The managment running the business side is very weak and trying to run it like a General Foods, KPMG or unilever when they should get mean and lean in order to compete with digital communications like Google et al. Still holding onto the ogliopoly, let’s see if the CRTC will protect them. If real competition enters Canada Telus and Bell will merge. So old-school thinking thinking a slash and burn will help. Oh well, the stock went up and that is the only focus, people are disposible. The future is friendly…for who?
    Merry Christmas?

  3. Meh, they just said that they are laying off the managers… they don’t touch the people who do the actual work for now. That’s seems better than what Nortel used to do…

  4. As far as I can tell none of the new players have entered onto the field yet, and they are all ready claiming competition. Just shows ya how weak of a business they are.

  5. It was more than Managers that were let go. The entire eBusiness development and JDE teams were cut too. I don’t know how they can say it was only management…it was more than that. Complete implementation teams are either gone or will be gone in Q1. As the comment above suggests, it certainly plays well in the press and public opinion if they say it is only managers.
    (sorry for my poor english).
