Bell and Rogers get nods in Opensignal’s new improvement awards

both carriers are roughly 2 percent better in niche aspects than last year

In a new report from wireless monitoring company Opensignel, Bell and Rogers both receive nods, but compared to global competitors, they’re still behind. With LTE and 5G, these awards matter much less than they did ten years ago, and honestly, if we’re not at the top, it feels weird to be getting these “awards.”

Rogers got a nod for improving its video streaming experience over 5G compared to last year, and Bell got one for being a “rising star” when it comes to voice services over 5G. But by looking at the chart on Opensignel’s website, it feels like a fancy way to say they got a bronze medal behind roughly 20 other carriers around the world.

It’s worth noting that to receive this nod, Rogers only improved its video streaming by 2.7 percent, and it only applies to 5G, something I’ve had issues with for years, so I still turn off 5G on my phones and run on LTE most of the time for more a more reliable network connection. Bell’s voice-over 5G recognition comes from a 2.2 percent improvement compared to last year. This includes things like calls made over WhatsApp and Facebook while on a 5G network.

Overall, I wouldn’t let these awards sway your buying decision. Knowing Canada, each region has its own pros and cons with each carrier, and usually, locals know what telecom will work best for them in their area. That being said, Black Friday is coming up, so keep your eyes on MobileSyrup to find out which carriers offer the best deals you can switch to.
