BlackBerry recently rebranded BlackBerry App World to simply “BlackBerry World.” The new direction set the stage to compete against their rivals and offer a wide selection of apps, games, music and movies. The company signed up large and indie distributors and has a goal to offer BlackBerry users a “one-stop shop for all of your mobile entertainment needs.”
Specifically for the music section, which is powered by 7Digital, BlackBerry said this will “feature an extensive catalog from all major and independent labels” such as Domino Recording Company, Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group, and Warner Music Group. Songs cost a minimim $1.29 (CDN) and albums are priced at $7.99 (CDN) and range to $12.99.
Missing from the group are all the unknown and unsigned artists. Today, a new partnership between BlackBerry and digital music distributor Zimbalam brings additional music to BlackBerry World, plus gives indies a new way to sell their music and also make some money. Apparently artists can “choose their release dates and the territories they want to sell their music in, pay a small distribution fee, and begin selling their music. Artists remain free and independent and earn 90% of their royalties from sales.”
Good move on BlackBerry’s part to bring more music to its customers.
