Asus launches PadFone Infinity for the price of a decent laptop

Asus has launched its next salvo in what it hopes will be a viable crossover genre: the PadFone Infinity. This phone/tablet combo promises savings in the long run, since it negates the need to purchase a tablet separately from the phone, but the €999 price ($1340 CDN) is a bit absurd.

The phone is a decent upgrade over the PadFone 2, which was announced late last year. It has a 5-inch 1080p Super IPS display, a 1.7Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 SoC, 2GB RAM, a 13MP camera and a 2400mAh battery. It also runs a fairly stock build of Android 4.2, which is nice.

The Pad, which uses the upgraded docking mechanism introduced with the PadFone 2, now has a 1920×1200 display and a 5000mAh battery, promising over 10 hours of battery life — and it also charges the phone — but it’s still an empty shell that requires the phone itself to run.

I’m just trying to think of a reason someone would purchase this over, say, a Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 combo; the leftover money would be enough for a Chromebook or a cheap Windows laptop. Obviously the price will come down over time, but it’s not a price point for most consumers. North Americans need not worry though; there’s little chance the Asus PadFone Infinity will ever see this side of the Atlantic.
