Netflix for iPhone updated with new UI and instant playback support

Netflix for iPhone has received a big update today as it prepares for iOS 6 and iPhone 5. While this release does not explicitly support the new 4-inch iPhone 5 screen — that is coming in the next release, the company says — there are some excellent new features that make the app worth the download.

First is a new homescreen with instant playback support (double-tap on any title) and a horizontal row of currently-playing videos. This brings the UI closer to that of the iPad and Android tablets, something quite difficult to achieve on the smaller iPhone screen. There are better parental controls and smoother performance included, too; we can’t wait to start streaming movies over LTE on the iPhone 5.

Netflix also claims a similar update is coming soon for Android phones, so stay tuned for that.
