When the ChevronWP7 team revealed, in November 2011, that they had coordinated with Microsoft itself to allow users to actively, and legitimately, jailbreak their Windows Phone, the market was stunned. Here was one of the biggest companies in the world making it relatively easy for users to install homebrew applications, and to skirt around the Marketplace-only requirements for sideloaded apps.
Now the team is reporting that in fact they are all sold out. According to spokesperson Rafael Rivera the team initially negotiated 10,000 unlock tokens at $9/piece, revenue to be shared between ChevronWP7’s team and Microsoft itself. But it seems that demand has been higher than expected, and those tokens have all been used.
This poses a problem for the team as they need to go back to Microsoft and ask for more, something they are not yet considering? Why? Because they’re already asked once, and it doesn’t seem prudent to bite the hand that feeds, at least not so soon. There are alternative methods if you own a Samsung or HTC device, but those are not Microsoft-endorsed.
