New Samsung patent leak shows potential in-display fingerprint scanner

Vivo phone with in-display fingerprint scanner

Samsung is potentially working on an in-display fingerprint scanner for its new phones, according to a report from 91Mobiles.

The report showcases a patent supposedly filed by Samsung that shows where it intends to position the scanner and how it works. The patent shows a similar setup to what’s featured on the Vivo X20 Plus UD.

Located near the bottom of the display, the in-screen scanner appears to use the light from the AMOLED display to read the fingerprint and authenticate the user.

The process of how Samsung's in-display fingerprint scanner works

It’s possible that we’ll see this technology in the Note 9. A report from earlier this year says that Samsung has three or four potential solutions for implementing an under-display fingerprint scanner.

This type of scanner is an optical scanner, but one of Samsung’s other potential solutions could be similar to Qualcomm’s ultrasonic fingerprint scanner.
