Government of Ontario opens OSAP online portal for 2018-2019 school year

Ontario's post-secondary students can calculate their estimated funding today

Post-secondary students across Ontario can now apply for OSAP.

The Government of Ontario’s OSAP — Ontario Student Assistance Program — portal is officially live for the 2018-2019 school year.

According to a November 8th, 2017 media release, this is the “earliest launch of OSAP applications ever,” with the portal opening four months sooner than in previous years.

The early launch is no doubt part of an OSAP push to get students enrolled on the Ontario government’s revised funding plans.

Approximately 210,000 full-time university and college students will be able to receive a free post-secondary education this year.

“Students and their families need to know about these changes to OSAP, because for the majority of families in Ontario, the new OSAP means a vastly more affordable college or university education,” said Premier Kathleen Wynne, in the same November release.

Additionally, even students from families with a combined income of $175,000 or more will be able to receive some form of OSAP funding.

“Early applications to the new OSAP will help [students] find out if they quality for generous grants or free tuition,” said Deb Matthews, Ontario’s deputy premier, who is also the minister of advanced education and skills development, as well as the minister responsible for digital government, in the same release.

The government has also launched an updated OSAP calculator that more accurately tabulates how much funding students can receive — without needing to set up an OSAP account.

Earlier this year, the Ontario government also launched a free online textbook portal — hosted on the ECampus Ontario website.
