Oculus says it’s working on a mid-range standalone VR headset

At a keynote presentation during Oculus’ Connect developer conference, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed a demo of a new virtual reality headset that’s designed to be a mid-range option that sits between devices like the Gear VR and Rift in terms of quality.

Zuckerberg says that the new headset is still in the prototype stage, but emphasizes that it will be a standalone experience and won’t rely on a smartphone like Google’s Daydream or Gear VR. He also says that its price tag will not be as high as the Oculus Rift’s and that the device will not be powered by a high-end PC.

The headset is reportedly designed to be portable, allowing it to be used on the go and appears to adopt a design that’s similar to the Rift, including a set of built-in headphones.

Facebook’s CEO did not reveal when the headset will be released or how much it’s set to cost.
