OPP’s weekend distracted driving blitz results in over 800 charges

Using your mobile device while driving has been against the law since 2009, with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) stated last week that distracted driving-related deaths are on track to double those of impaired driving.

Heading into the Labour Day long weekend, a blitz was organized to educate and ticket drivers who disobeying the law, resulting in a record number of tickets being handed out.

According to a release by the OPP, Labour Day Weekend was the “deadliest” in 20 years, resulting in approximately 800 distracted/inattentive driving charges over the three day period.

This brings the total number of distracted driving charges laid in Ontario in 2016 to over 8,800.

Recently distracted driving fines for caught using their handheld device — such as a smartphone, tablet, laptop, MP3, or DVD player — while driving to a minimum of $490.
