OnePlus to offer free shipping on all orders over $150 CAD (update: now live)

OnePlus 2

When OnePlus announced the OnePlus 2 this past July, the company’s promise of an affordable flagship Android phone quickly fell apart for a lot of Canadians. With tax, shipping and duties included, the $409 CAD phone ended costing closer to $600 when all was said and done. Almost six months after launch, the OnePlus 2 is set to become more affordable, though not because of a price drop.

The company today announced that all orders above $150 CAD now include free shipping. OnePlus hasn’t implemented the change to its online store yet — so if you’ve been waiting to buy a OnePlus 2 or OnePlus X, wait just a bit longer.

In a statement on its official forum, the company says it felt it needed to offer free shipping to compete with larger smartphone OEMs. “We’ve heard a lot of feedback about our shipping services, which is why we’re proud to implement a change like this. As we are still just a small fish in a very big pond, a change of this size will naturally have a negative impact on our bottom-line,” says the post. “However, if we’re to survive in this blink-and-you’ll-miss-it business we need to be able to offer our users the level of service they’ve come to expect when shopping online.”

Update: OnePlus’ updated shipping policy is now in effect.

“We missed updating the free shipping for Canada and Hong Kong during the announcement. Right now it’s fixed for Canada and Hong Kong,” said a spokesperson for the company. “For the effected customers who are eligible for free shipping between the announcement date and 20th January, we’re going to refund your shipping fee.”
