Vancouver-based The Coalition’s Gears of War: E-Day will launch on October 6, 2026 on Xbox Series X/S and PC.
The release date was confirmed during the opening of today’s Xbox Games Showcase + Gears of War: E-Day Direct presentations. The first-ever gameplay from E-Day was also shown off. The prequel, which follows Marcus Fenix (John DiMaggio) and Dom Santiago (Carlos Ferro) during the titular cataclysmic event that tees up the original trilogy, was originally announced two years ago.
In the Xbox Games Showcase opening, we see Marcus Fenix and his friends in their civilian clothes as they run through a Locust-infested city of Kalona. New Xbox boss Asha Sharma also confirmed that the game will be an Xbox console exclusive, shutting down speculation that it may come to PS5 after a variety of Xbox multiplatform releases, including last year’s Gears of War: Reloaded.
A deeper dive into E-Day came immediately after the Xbox Games Showcase in the Gears of War: E-Day Direct. In it, we visited The Coalition and heard from several members of the team.
In terms of narrative, the Canadian developer says it wants to return to the darker, almost horror-tinged atmosphere of the original game. In particular, the team is emphasizing that these are younger and less experienced versions of Marcus and Dom, who are distant from one another at the start of the game amid the loss of a friend. The duo will also have to work with the new Bravo Squad and navigate tensions as a nascent team. The Coalition adds that it’s leaning into the “rough edges” of war movies to have shakier cameras and grittier visuals.
Gameplay-wise, the developer says it’s retaining the “heaviness” of the core third-person shooter gameplay but adding “fluidity” to make it more dynamic. A key part of this are “completely rebuilt movement and cover systems,” including new low-ground cover. You can also manually jump and slide while sprinting, affording more verticality to the level design. Meanwhile, E-holes have returned to allow Locust hordes to spring up from the ground at any moment to add even more suspense and intensity to the moment-to-moment gameplay.
Of course, The Coalition also wanted to tout the game’s technical strengths, which are built upon Unreal Engine 5. This 4K/60fps in campaign and up to 120fps in multiplayer, more massive, destructible and detailed environments than ever, ray-tracing, upgraded facial animation systems (including, amusingly, more detail in his eyebrows than he did in his entire character model in the original game), a new gore and dismemberment system and more.
The Coalition also discussed multiplayer, given that it’s such a big part of Gears. In addition to four-player campaign co-op, the game will include 4v4 competitive modes that build on the vertical level design from the campaign and a 12-player Horde mode in which squads team up to fight massive enemies.
All in all, E-Day is looking to be a great celebration of the series’ 20th anniversary this year. You can watch the full Gears of War: E-Day Direct on demand on YouTube.
