The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) is now requiring service providers to notify customers before their contracts, discounts, or promotions end.
The new notifications, implemented as part of a consultation regarding enhanced customer notifications, also include being notified when you have incurred a $50 roaming charge. The notifications must also include a list of available plans and how customers can switch to those plans.
According to the CRTC, the new measure is designed to prevent what the commission calls “bill shock,” and to give Canadians the information they need to make an informed decision about their plans.
These new notification requirements are part of a variety of protection measures that the CRTC has been putting into place recently. Last month, the commission announced it is taking action against carriers charging activation fees, which will take effect June 12, 2026.
