Google cancels Monday’s Android event due to Hurricane Sandy

Google’s big Android event in New York City on Monday has been canceled. This was supposed to be a fun filled event where they stated “the playground is open,” possibly unveiling a number of new Nexus devices.

Here’s the email we’ve now received from Google, titled “An important update on the Android event:”

“We are canceling our Monday morning event in New York due to Hurricane Sandy. We will let you know our plans as soon as we know more.

Stay safe and dry,
The Android Team”

The past few weeks have leaked out what was expected to be shown off, specifically the LG Nexus 4, Samsung’s Nexus 10 tablet, possibly a wireless charging device, the 32GB Wi-Fi and 3G Nexus 7 tablet, and an updated OS to version 4.2 Jelly Bean. No word yet on when the new device announcements will be.

    So lame they should make these events in Toronto, no hurricanes to worry about. If this event is cancelled why not release the products anyway, talk about em some other day I just want to have that Nexus 4 in my hands

      The hurricane’s heading for Toronto, too.

      Not necessarily, Hurricane Sandy WILL impact Toronto. Perhaps not to the extent that it will NYC, but there will be some quite strong winds, downpours and possible flooding around the GTA. Things could get messy.

      Also, don’t forget Hurricane Hazel, it was a full on hurricane that affected quite a bit of southern Ontario. Toronto’s had it’s fair share of bad storms!

    Is there an official announcement about the event being cancelled? All sites are sourcing Marketing Land, and I have a hard time believing sites that have more ads than content.

    Don’t blame Google for it. NYC is currently under State of Emergency and the place where the event was going to be held is a potential flood risk. So even if Google doesn’t cancel on its own will, the Government of NYC will.

    They should just do the presentation online and use a 20,000 dollar video camera but say the presentation is being filmed by a Nexus 10.

    Unlike the Nokia ad, there will be no way people can find out since no one would be there.

    @kroms, I agree with you. You guys need to get a life. An earthquake, magnitude of 7.7 just hit Haida Gwaii, BC. Now there’s a Tsuanmi warning for Northern Vancouver. There are more important things in life, like people’s safety and their lives!

    …. And a little rain must fall. Ok so when exactly is Google going to put an end to ‘fragmentation’ of the Os? Love my Galaxy S3 & Nexus S. But why does the later have Jelly Bean and the flagship does not? Wait til November I’m told. Nice innovations Google but far too many phones that can’t be updated after a year. Sony xperia is a perfect example. And yes if I had a university degree in Linux I could hack my phones but I don’t. I sign a contract cause I’m not a millionaire and don’t mess with things I know f all about. Cheers
