WIND Mobile to release the HTC Radar (Windows Phone)

Late last week it was revealed that Videotron and SaskTel would be releasing the Windows Phone HTC Radar, now WIND Mobile has officially announced that the device is “coming soon” – it’ll be their first WP7 device. Specs have the Radar coming with a 3.8-inch display (resolution of 480 x 800), 1GHz processor, 5 megapixel camera which captures 720p HD videos, VGA front-facing camera. Those interested in scoring this can actually pre-register for it via the WIND site here.

    • Check the GSMarena battery tests. Lumia 710 is one of the best phones for talking with over 9 continuous hours, but isn’t good for even four hours of either video watching or web browsing. It also has a 27h “endurance rating”.

HTC Radar has less talk time: almost 7 continuous hours. However, it also has over 7 hours of web browsing and almost 6 for video watching. Standby is better, too, because it has a 34h “endurance rating”. It also has a VGA front-facer, good for Skype. :)

Unlike some comments that pop on here, the Lumia 710 CAN be unlocked for WIND, if talk and text is your thing. Anyone who wants to surf or video chat, though, should use the HTC Radar instead.

Note: the GSMarena tests i cited were done by (for example) JUST talking/surfing/video, or an hour of each per day and standby for the other 21 hours in the “endurance rating”.

    • If the off-contract price for the radar is even close to what Rogers is selling the 710 for, I’ve found my next phone… But I’ll be waiting for the 850/1900 band version Sasktel is getting.

  5. Interesting this phone can be better than the Nokia Lumia 710 depends on what you are looking for. This phone has a FFC so it can be more future proof when Microsoft releases Skype to the OS.
I just hope they price it similar to the Nokia Lumia 710

  7. I am on Wind and would like to see them get a couple of entry level Windows phone like the Radar and 710. I got the 710 for my son and it’s a great entry level device. Got it from Rogers for only $259 outright. That being said, I would like to see Wind push for a high end Windows device when one is available on their spectrum. Hopefully the upcoming Samsung Mendel will be dual core and available on Wind’s spectrum. The Radar is a good start, hope this is a sign of more to come.

  8. MikeW, I don’t know where to you’re getting that info, but I am pretty sure that Windows Phone 8 (Apollo) will support multicore, but won’t make having dual core a requirement. There aren’t any dual core WP7 phones available right now because the OS doesn’t support multi core processors.

  9. I read that WP8 would required multi core. I don’t know if that’s official. Hence I said, I’d wait.

    • Mike, the leaks on WP8 (Apollo) say that it will SUPPORT dual core, not that it is a requirement. Dual cores are going to be needed mostly for higher resolution screen.

  10. Imported a T-Mobile one from the US back in December and been using it on Wind ever since. Paid a little more than I imagine I would have on Wind but the two or so months that I’ve had it and enjoyed it where probaly worth the cost. Brilliant operating system on a pretty solid network. Really enjoy/recommend.

    • Unfortunatly I am not privy to the plans of Wind and therefor I made the decision to buy one from the United States as I had used a Windows Phone on Rogers and thouroghly enjoyed the experiences. I have no obligation to purchase a phone from Wind. They are a business not a charity. I am a paying customer who pays a monthly fee to use their service and they make a profit from my fees. Of Course I would like Wind to do well and I am supporting them by being a customer.

  11. Since Windows 8 will also be run on Tablets, It doesn’t need all that much. as long as it’s a 1GHZ and enough Memory/Size It’s Possible to run Win 8.

Besides, The Radar is an incredible phone I would like to have.

    • Just a reminder though: Windows 8 isn’t the same as Windows Phone 8 (Appolo)

  12. The Radar is probably much better than the Lumia 710. If there were any chance the Lumia 900 was coming to Wind, I’d hold out for that, but I think I’m getting myself the Radar. :)

    • mobile phone != computer. faster cores doesn’t mean smoother experience. so what if your android has dual core? i have a single core samsung focus and it doesn’t crash/lag on me at all. It’s smoother than my friend’s SGS2! I’m not making this up, he agrees with me regarding the smoother experience of windows phone than android.

    • Fortunately with WP 7.5 we only complain about not having dual-core because – simply put – for the sake of having it. The OS doesn’t need it at this time, it functions very well at 1GHz single core, and if that isn’t enough, Microsoft is optimizing the OS further so that it can effectively operate using 256MB RAM (down from the standard 512MB).

  16. I also bought this phone in the US. The amount of storage is unfortunate, but this is otherwise an excellent device.

Also, for anyone who wants this phone but doesn’t like Wind, the TMobile version does work on the big 3 carriers (TMobile’s spec sheet incorrectly omits 850/1900 HSPA for this phone), so this might be a good outright buy too, if the price isn’t outrageous.

  18. If Wind wants their stores to blow up on launch day, drop this bad boy for about $199.99, bring back the original $40 plan. They should also drop it before Telus unleashes the Nokia Lumia 800.

  20. I would take Nokia Lumia 710 over this one. Why ?
Lumia 710 made in Korea not in China.
Lumia has free GPS (Nokia GPS)
Nokia phone will last longer then any other phone.
Lumia has 1.4cpu vs 1ghz HTC.
last phones are made to make call, text and check emails. not to spend 6 hours streaming videos and web searching. buy tablet or Laptop.

    • Purpose of FEATURE PHONE is to make calls. Purpose of smartphone is to NOT NEED a tablet or laptop.
