If you’re looking around the streets of Toronto and Montreal today you’ll notice on bus shelters new advertising that only says “Unlimited”. There’s no company attached to the ad, just a person with the simple “unlimited” tag line.
Curious to know who is behind these… well it’s none other than new wireless entrant Public Mobile. They’ve started to infiltrate both markets, prepping for their upcoming launch. It’s well known that Public will offer a flat rate $40 unlimited talk and text plan and we hear they’ll have over 20 retail locations when they actually go live.
Uhh, sounds like quite the dumb ad campaign if they have no branding whatsoever, not to mention they’re a nobody company at the moment.
In another twist, for the sensitive types, it could be interpreted as a racial joke, haha.

Despite the naysayers, I believe that Public Mobile will serve their niche market well. I anticipate that Public Mobile will appeal to a “cost conscious” consumer that is looking for a “no frills” device. It is doubtful that Public Mobile will target mobile enthusiasts and readers of Mobilesyrup.com. As a mobile enthusiast, I won’t be making the switch – The idea of an obscure band of CDMA is enough to send any mobile fanboy scurrying for the hills. I can, however, see my Grandma, Mom, Low Income households, and technophobes buying this product in droves. Comparable to Wind, if they introduce a 50 dollar handset with no contract and a 40 dollar per month price point – why wouldn’t this be an attractive price point for a second phone in the house?

Why is there an Indian on the ad? What’s that mean, exactly? Is he just a colourful character to laugh at? Or perhaps they’re going after a target market?

If Public Mobile can’t match Wind on province-wide or nationwide calling they’ll have a hard time winning over bargain hunters.

@ F. Gajtani
It’s because he’s also Canadian.
Do the characters have to be of a certain racial group?

I am one of those people you mention (the ones who don’t use mobile phones very often and also don’t have a lot of money). I don’t live in Ontario, so I can’t get Public Mobile. But if I did live there, it would still be too expensive.
Make it $20/month, and you’d have a deal.

Let me sart off by saying that this is far from dumb. Marketing is designed to attract attention and that is exactly what this poster does. Public Mobile will make their brand know in coming months, of that I’m sure.
The low income bargain driven people that are fed up with paying 250$ – 400$ for an out of contract handset will just at the offer of no contract and nation wide unlimited plans!!! I say hurry up and launch because im on board!. Yes its not gsm and yes i make 78000 a year but when i see a good deal i start to care a bit less about my 120$ a month iphone/data plan with 300 local day minutes.

The man on the ad is not the point.
Like Benetton ads from the past, the image is created to just stir discussion, and so you will remember the ad.
That’s it.
The next ad may have a toothless hillbilly, means nothing other than trying to burn the image, the ad, the brand in your head.

Wind Mobile has a 35$ unlimited province wide calling plan, and a 5$ unlimited text addon. Public Mobile is only local calling for 40$.
So… nothing special? :/

I’m on board withy friend has to constantly call me b Public Mobile because they offer UNLIMITED TEXT AND TALK for $40. And I heard even though they have a BIGGER NETWORK RECEPTION is CRAP. My friend has to constantly call me because of crappy reception. When Public Mobile releases I hope their network is better than Wind.
