PlayStation reveals Ghost of Tsushima sequel, Ghost of Yōtei, coming 2025

The game features a new protagonist in a story set hundreds of years later in a different region of Japan

PlayStation ended its September State of Play presentation with the official unveiling of a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima called Ghost of Yōtei.

Developed once again by Sucker Punch (inFamous), the new samurai action game follows a new female ‘Ghost’ warrior named Atsu in 1603 Japan in Mount Yōtei area, which is described as having “sprawling grasslands, snowy tundras, and unexpected dangers.” In modern times, this area would be known as Hokkaido. For context, the first game, which launched on PS4 in July 2020, followed a male samurai named Jin Sakai in 1274 Japan on the titular Tsushima island.

In a PlayStation Blog post, Sucker Punch stressed that Ghost of Yōtei will “maintain the core pillars established in Ghost of Tsushima: playing as a wandering warrior in Feudal Japan, offering freedom to explore at your own pace, and highlighting the beauty of the world.”

At the same time, the studio want to “create something fresh but familiar,” resulting in a story set hundreds of years after Jin Sakai’s. “It’s a far cry from the organized samurai clans who lived in Tsushima,” remarks Sucker Punch.

Of course, this is Sucker Punch’s first game built directly from the ground up for PS5, following a Ghost of Tsushima remaster for the console in 2021. To that end, Sucker Punch is teasing “massive sightlines that let you look far across the environment, whole new skies featuring twinkling stars and auroras, even more believable movement from wind on grass and vegetation, and more improvements we’ll share in the future.”

All in all, the developer says to expect “new mechanics, gameplay improvements, and even new weapons.” No other details were revealed, so we’ll have to wait for more information in the coming months.

Ghost of Yōtei is set to release on PS5 sometime in 2025.
