Flickr for iOS adds new filters and editing tools to bridge the gap between casual and pro user

For a long time, Flickr was the de facto portal for professional photographers on the internet. But with the rise of Instagram and its ilk over the past few years, the Yahoo-owned company has seen an increasing number of its photos uploaded by three devices: the iPhone 4, iPhone 4S and iPhone 5.

The iPhone  is now officially the company’s most popular device, so it makes sense that it would focus its latest update on making the experience better for those millions of users.

In the latest version, Flickr has added a number of live filters, which allow users to add effects and adjust them granularly by moving a finger up or down on the screen. It’s a tactile way to evolve the look and feel of a photo, and it works.

For those who want a bit more control over the picture-taking experience, Flickr has added focus and exposure lock, adding grids for more balanced photos and, after the shot, adjusting sharpness, colour and more.

Much of the additions were due to the acquisition of KitCam and GhostBird Software, which happened as part of Yahoo’s purchasing blitz earlier this year.

With Yahoo now offering all of its users 1TB of upload space, it definitely feels like a whole product again.
