TELUS is taking its high penetration in Canada’s western provinces quite seriously, releasing a statement today cementing its intention to cover much of Alberta with LTE wireless speeds by year’s end. The company currently offers more than 85% of Albertans with LTE speeds up to 75Mbps.

The improvements are a part of a $700 million infrastructure investment in the province this year, and $2.6 billion over three years, which includes laying fibre optic cable and improving the speed and quality of its Optik TV package.

The telecom company has been in the news quite a bit lately, having put in an offer to rescue Mobilicity from its extensive financial troubles by purchasing the new entrant for $380 million. It also recently rose above Bell as the second-largest wireless carrier in the country with over 7.7 million subscribers. The acquisition of Mobilicity will not only net TELUS an extra quarter million subscribers, which will likely be integrated into its Koodo discount brand, but it will gain precious spectrum in Southern Ontario, Vancouver and Ottawa that will level the capacity playing field against Rogers and Bell in much of the country.

TELUS also claims to have the most loyal and satisfied customers in the country, though all three incumbents have been pushing product simplification and improved in-store experiences in recent years.
