Asus to announced PadFone 2 at event in Taipei on October 16th

The Asus PadFone was ambitious, misguided and, eventually, unsuccessful. The phone-that-becomes-a-tablet amazed pundits when it debuted in 2011, but came to market in April of this year after a thorough retooling and slimming down. While the phone itself was capable, its tablet capabilities — the phone “docked” inside a tablet housing — was buggy and half-baked.

The company is set to debut its follow-up to that project, the PadFone 2, on October 16th, simultaneously in Milan and Taipei. While we don’t know a lot about the phone/tablet, a benchmark released last week revealed that the phone will have a 1.5Ghz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro SoC with an Adreno 320 GPU, along with 2GB RAM. Benchmark scores are way higher than the previous model, and rival the newly-announced Optimus G for top contender in the Android space.

As for the tablet component, we’re expecting an upgrade in screen size and resolution, hopefully to 1080p, and improved overall performance with Jelly Bean.
