The iPhone 4S is official!
The new device has the same form factor as the previous iPhone 4, but the internals are all new. It has the A5 processor of the iPad 2, with up to 7x the graphics capabilities.
There is a new antenna design to increase voice quality and cut down on dropped calls — no more Antennagate. It is also 4G-compatible, able to download at speeds of up to 14.4Mbps. It is also a world phone, meaning it has simultaneous CDMA and HSPA+ capabilities in one device. No more CDMA-only version. This is really only good for those few countries remaining on CDMA networks like Verizon, Sprint in the US and many Chinese telecoms.
Battery life has also been improved, up to 8 hours of talk time per charge.
There is a new 8MP camera system with a backlit CMOS sensor, wide F2.4 aperture lens, which lets in 73% more light than the iPhone 4. It’s also a lot faster, up to 1/3x the speed. Along with auto white-balance and face-detection, there’s 1080p video capture with real-time image stabilization.
In addition to iOS5, the iPhone 4S will come with built-in semantic voice recognition. Ask it what the weather is outside, in a conversational tone, and it responds in kind. You can define words, get direct content from Wolfram Alpha and Wikipedia. You can set alarms and reminders. It’s a personal Cortana.
Pre-orders will be starting on October 7th, on sale on the 15th in the United states only.
iPhone 4S pricing: 16GB for $199, 32GB for $299, and 64GB for $399
