TELUS announces the HTC Desire is coming soon

We already knew that this was coming… but it’s always a good thing to get some official confirmation! Today TELUS held an event for the HTC Desire where they officially announced that it was “coming soon”. We have no official dates or pricing it will come with Android OS 2.1 and it will be upgradable to 2.2 in the future.

David Fuller, Chief Marketing Officer at TELUS stated “With social media being an essential part of the way Canadians communicate and stay informed, TELUS is committed to bring them some of the best smartphones available on the market to answer that need. The HTC Desire is not only the perfect smartphone to stay in the know of everything that’s going on around you”.

The Desire comes with a 3.7-inch display with a resolution of 800×480, a 5. megapixel camera with video capabilities, can hold up to 32GB with a microSD card, WiFi. We will upload a quick video of the Desire in action and will have more updates soon.

  2. Did I hear her right? Did she say that it can display Flash sites because I’m pretty sure that we won’t see that until Froyo.

  5. Ahh this is soo hard. I really really love my Hero and the Sense UI. I think its one of the better custom UIs built for the Android platform (imo, way better than the Mediascape crap on the X10 that lags crazy). And the more I see the Desire, the more I kinda want to stay with HTC, just because Ive been an HTC user for the past 2.5 years.

But then I look at the Samsung phones on Bell: the Samsung Wave and Galaxy S. Galaxy S runs Android 2.1, on a 1GHz Hummingbird processor, 5MP camera with 720p HD recording, etc. Than the Wave with its Bada OS (which is a custom Android/TouchWiz UI), with the same specs, Super AMOLED screen, 5MP wé flash and 720p recording, bluetooth 3.0, wifi n, etc etc.

I dunno, anyone have any ideas between the Wave, Galaxy S or DesireÉ I am currently on Telus right now, if that helps.

  7. Yeah HTC has Flash 4.1 I think built into sense, so yes you can have flash even though it isnt Froyo. But it isnt as good as what we will see in Froyo.

  8. HTC has flash on 2.1, otherwise you are correct that flash is only supported in 2.2

  11. Just because they say its upgradable to 2.2 in the future doesn’t mean Telus will actually push through the update in a timely manner. Just ask all the Hero owners that are still waiting for the elusive 2.1 update that was supposed to come through in March.

  14. Agree with Fate. Had telus released this last month I would have bought one. However, with the impending release of the far superior Samsung Vibrant, I feel that the timing is not optimal for this device.

All worth a grad total of FA in less than three months.

Anyone ever question why they are pushing these dime a dozen devices. Three in less than six months.

    Lol!

  17. @Jq News flash, those far superior device will not hit Canada for a while.

The only superior product that is coming soon is the Samsung Galaxy S and with Samsung upgrading track record, you might be better off with an HTC.

I am glad TELUS brings those devices, they’re the only Canadian carier with a descent phone line.

    Lol? really?

  18. just to confirm aswell htc’s sence phones do have flash lite,
and yes flash lite is nothing..
my windows phones have flash lite.. lol
    anyone want tha cabs? lol
Flash lite 3.1 or Flash player 7 ? lol
    Useless,
have fun trying to find i site that has jarassic flash.. Alltho its cool when you do . lol

BTW You Can install 10.1 on most HTC 2.1 sence phones..

just search xda-developers forums, As it wont show up in tha market unless you have 2.2 or if you find it you Can Not install it.

i may have tha flash 10.1 apk aswell .

this claim was not tested by myself tho..

Tha idea is that stock android browser does not support Plugins .
htc built plugin support in there sence ui’s browser.. so installing flash 10.1 on an htc phone with 2.1 works (so iv herd)
Google only put plugin support in 2.2′s browser,
Seems to me if thats all it is then google could have releaced a minor firmware update for everone else to injoy flash 10.1 Aswell .

  19. Wow, 5 megapixel camera and 7 screens. Oh and 12 clocks. And.. Flash in browser. Or not. Really compelling demo. ;)

Why do all the weather widgets show the current temperature and conditions? I never need to know that, I can look out the window. Maybe it’s for prisoners in solitary confinement, but they wouldn’t have a handset and anyway it’s a pretty small audience.

The Galaxy S has nice specs, but their add-ons are pretty awful, and the camera isn’t that great. I’d go for a Galaxy S Pro though, or any decent spec’d device with a hardware keyboard.

I’m wondering when Rogers is going to come out with decent Android handsets, or should I switch.

  29. @Chris

Android is Googles smartphone operating system, so an Android phone is one that runs the Android operating system. Comparing this to an iPhone, which runs iOS.

If you use the iphone you use the apple app store, if you use android, its google marketplace. The appstore has around 200K apps, the marketplace is expected to hit 100K apps this month. Does the difference in number of apps matter much? Not sure yet, it seems that there is an app for pretty much anything on both platforms, I guess you just have more options on the appstore. Both will have their fair share of great apps and crap apps though.

The pros of the android system is that it is fully customizable, and its a more open system.

The pros of the iphone is that it is simpler to use because of the lack of customization. Also, because the iphone is still more mainstream with non-techies, it still seems that when a new company decides to join create an app, they make their iphone app first.

A simple google search of HTC desire vs iPhone 4 will get you lots of results, or Android vs iphone. It is a tough subject to research though because of each sites fanboys.

For me, I think both the HTC Desire and the Iphone 4 are great phones, as well as the Galaxy S which will come out for Bell soon. For me, I really like the customization options and I like the Sense UI of the HTC. When you see someones iphone, it looks like every other iphone out there. With android, and the different widgets and customizable screens, everyones phone will look and feel different.

  30. I was just looking at the Telus website and noticed that TELUS International Roaming was not available for this phone and that GSM was not listed under the specifications for the device. The original Desire supports quad band GSM, does anyone know if the Telus version is going to be crippled?

  31. @ Willy The phone will almost certainly be locked to Telus but you can get an unlock code for 20$ or so and have the phone unlocked within a few hours.
I bought a milestone from TELUS to run on Fido and once unlocked, had no issue whatsoever.

@stranger THis phone should support quad band GSM. The thing is that TELUS does not support this, they are exclusively a 3G+ network so they don’t support the 2G/2.5G associated with those quad band.

Once the phone is released, a simple lookup of the FCC label should clear that up. A good comparison would be the Milestone, which is quad band GSM and tri-band HSPA.

  32. @Labrat I’ve been waiting for the Desire but I really want a device that will work well in Europe as well. I guess I’m just being impatient really so I’l just have to wait and see :)

I was thinking along the same lines as you but the thing the threw me off was that the HTC Hero lists quad band GSM as well as international support. I was surprised that the Desire didn’t. Hopefully it’s just an error with the initial data on the website.

    Thanks for the reply.

  33. Damn you Telus, and your high end Android phones! I still have a year left on my Rogers contract, so I’m hard pressed to switch right now (an extra $200+ for early cancellation? Dunno about that one). The problem is I’m happy with Rogers, other than their serious lack of Android phones.

I believe these devices are really close in quality and functionality that it going to come down to opinion.

Checking one article and making your decision based on that is very tough in this case because of the fanboys (google ones are just as bad an iphone ones) I had a hell of a time researching these phones because of that reason.

For me, I had been waiting for an iphone 4 since January, but once I saw the customizations of the UI and widgets that came with HTC Sense, I knew thats what I wanted.

  37. The HTC Desire HD is rumored to be launching in October 2010.

4.3″ WVGA screen with an 8 MP camera and 720p video recording running on Froyo and a unibody aluminum design similar to the Legend.

  39. To Ryan who was saying that he preferred getting an iphone4 after reading the article. That’s fine both are great phones. I was just pointing out that the Desire is one of if not the best android phones out there. The lack of flash for the iphone4 is a deal breaker for me, but otherwise it’s a great phone.

Actually, it does have upgraded specs from the Nexus one.

For example, the desire has more RAM – 576MB versus the Nexus One’s 512MB.
