Update: Quote of the Day: Sawiris on Globalive “We think the ruling will be overruled.”

windmobilelogoWe posted this quote earlier today and thought it was the quote of the day, and we have some updates.

Orascom Telecom, the organization that has invested into new wireless player Globalive (WIND Mobile) is confident that the ruling by the CRTC will be overruled and they will start operating before the year end. At a media conference in Cairo, Orascom Chairman Naguib Sawiris said “We are optimistic about getting up and running after resolving issues with the regulator… We think the ruling will be overruled.”

In an article by Reuters, they go into a further details than the above Bloomberg quote. Chairman Naguib Sawiris said they still aim to launch the WIND brand “We are set to launch before Christmas… There were some barriers to our control over the company there. We are not controlling the company and are sticking to all their terms”.

This sounds a little bit more on track as Industry Minister Tony Clement is still looking for insight to make his final decision on if the new wireless carrier will be given the green light to launch. There is no official confirmed date of when his decision will be announced.

Yesterday we wrote that Chris Robbins, CCO (Chief Customer Officer) of WIND stated on their company blog that they are “not about selling out. We’ve always been about being here for the long term, not – like some of the other potential new entrants – about a quick sale to one of the incumbents. We’ve been listening to Canadians for over a year as we’ve built out a network, and stores and services and platforms. Our goal is to be here to stay”.

Even Globalive Chairman Tony Lacavera has been quoted this week “I don’t intend to give up now.”

  1. Well. They were confident that the CRTC would rule in their favour the first time… that didn’t pan out.

Although, Industry Canada did give them the green light the first time around and is probably red-faced with the inconsistencies of the CRTC ruling… even though it looks like the CRTC was following the laws correctly.

Tony Clement would have to say that foreign ownership is now welcomed in Canada for this to be over-turned.

The fact that minister took it on himself to review the ruling without waiting for Globalive to appeal may be a good indication.

  3. I would be surprised if WIND launched before the end of the year, I was thinking it would be early 2010. I can’t wait to dump Bell and their god awful customer service, service, etc.

  4. Can someone do something for these guys (Wind)? We live in a freaking democracy yet the cell providers run their business as if we were a bunch of communists. They actually fight to see who can screw the Canadian consumer the worst. I’m with Bell, they’re charging me 800 plus to leave. I’ll gladly freaking pay it I’ve got a defective phone that’s 6 months old and they want me to buy another one outright. They no longer honour a 1 year warranty with blackberry. I experience dropped calls like nobody’s business and they do nothing. Get rid of the CRTC. I refuse to pay to get raped. That’s prostitution!
